Region's Natural-Gas Industry Profiled at Library Event
Sept. 29, 2009 - 6:49 p.m.
A two-part
presentation
in Penn College's Madigan Library provided some free insight (and some historical hindsight) into the formidable natural-gas industry in the area. “Oil’s Stepchild: The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia: A History from the First Discovery to the Maturity of the Industry” was discussed by David A. Waples, a corporate communications manager for a natural-gas utility and speech communications teacher at Penn State Erie, and Larry L. Michael, executive director of workforce and economic development, shared findings from the recent Marcellus Shale Workforce Needs Assessment.
Natural-Gas Industry to Fuel Presentations at Penn College Library
Sept. 23, 2009 - 2:57 p.m.
The natural-gas industry in the area, from its little-known past to its economically expansive future, will be discussed by two speakers during a Sept. 29 event at Penn College’s Madigan Library. “Oil’s Stepchild: The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia: A History from the First Discovery to the Maturity of the Industry,” will kick off the discussion, which is free and open to the public from 4-5 p.m. in the library’s second-floor reading loft. The second half of the program will feature Larry L. Michael, executive director of workforce and economic development, who will share findings from the recent Marcellus Shale Workforce Needs Assessment.
Penn College Students Get Eyeful of Some Very Heavy Equipment
Aug. 19, 2009 - 4:17 p.m.
A Heavy Construction Equipment Operations class from Penn College recently toured the Chief Oil & Gas gas-drilling location in western Lycoming County, seeing a first-of-its-kind electric rig designed specifically for the Marcellus Shale play. The students were engaged in a discussion on a variety of topics related to Chief’s Marcellus program; company representatives talked specifically about site preparation and other aspects of their operations that apply directly to the college’s heavy construction equipment technology: operator emphasis major.
Educational Offerings Provide Skills to Enter Marcellus Shale Industry
July 2, 2009 - 11:53 a.m.
Penn College is responding to the recent Marcellus Shale Industry Needs Assessment by offering a number of short- and long-term education opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing career opportunities that could be available as the oil and gas industry expands in the region. As a result of a workforce assessment of the industry released June 23, Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College and the Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center are developing a comprehensive pre-employment training program and customized noncredit courses to be offered this fall in welding, commercial driving, safety, electrical, electronic and other entry-level skills required in the industry.
Job Growth Expected from Natural-Gas Industry Development
June 23, 2009 - 12:25 p.m.
The developing natural-gas industry in Pennsylvania will create jobs and offer opportunities for local residents who seek training and industry experience, according to the Marcellus Shale Workforce Needs Assessment released at Penn College on Tuesday. The report suggests that, depending on the intensity of development, between 1,292 and 2,153 direct, full-time jobs could be required in the Northern Tier (Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming counties) this year to support well drilling and production. The number of jobs is expected to grow to between 2,107 and 3,511 by 2011 and to between 3,281 and 5,468 by 2013.
Penn College Alumni Among Local Pioneers in Gas Exploration
May 28, 2009 - 4:59 p.m.
Two Penn College graduates are in the midst of storybook lives, if you consider that the “story” is one of the biggest to hit Pennsylvania in the 150 years since Edwin Drake struck oil at Titusville: development of the Marcellus Shale, a geological swath that runs beneath a half-dozen states and could hold enough natural gas to slake a nation thirsty for a homegrown energy supply. Amanda M. Kennedy and George P. “Pat” Moriarity are employed by an Appalachian arm of Chief Oil & Gas, a Texas-based company that is among those exploring the potentially profitable underground formation.
House Committee Holds On-Campus Hearing on Natural Gas Issues
May 8, 2009 - 1:58 p.m.
The state House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee held a hearing on campus Thursday, focusing on leasing issues, revenue sharing and economic development related to the Marcellus Shale natural gas reserves. The hearing, held in the ACC Auditorium, was co-hosted by state Rep. Rick Mirabito, D-Williamsport, a member of the Penn College Board of Directors (at right in accompanying photo), and state Rep.
