Penn College Authorized Provider for Shell Bluebook Orientation

The Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center at Penn College is offering a Shell Bluebook Orientation noncredit course. The MSETC is an authorized provider for the training, which is presented at the Center for Business & Workforce Development on the college’s main campus in Williamsport and at the college’s North Campus near Wellsboro. The four-hour safety-awareness orientation instructs students on Shell’s systematic approach for meeting and exceeding compliance with the law; management of health, safety and environmental risks; and continuous improvement. The training describes the Shell Golden Rules and the company’s 12 Life-Saving Rules.
Commonwealth Cabinet Secretary Visits Penn College

C. Alan Walker, secretary of the state Department of Community and Economic Development, visited Penn College on Friday. Walker toured the Weatherization Training Center along Reach Road – seeing firsthand how the facility has earned its sterling reputation – and discussed the college's leadership role in the Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center and the WEDnetPA Guaranteed Free Training Program. Welcomed by college President Davie Jane Gilmour, the secretary also heard from Larry L. Michael, assistant vice president for workforce development and special projects; John E. Manz and Alison A. Dillon, Pennsylvania Housing Resource Center director and assistant director, respectively; and Tom J. Venditti, statewide director of WEDnetPA.
Two Named to Assistant VP Positions at Penn College

Two administrators in Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College have been appointed to assistant vice president positions. Larry L. Michael was named assistant vice president for workforce development and special projects. Tracy L. Brundage was appointed assistant vice president for workforce and economic development. Michael, who began his employment with Penn College in 1991 as interim director of the Technology Transfer Center/continuing education, served most recently as executive director, workforce and economic development. Brundage, who has been employed by the college since 2007, previously served as managing director, workforce development and continuing education. College President Davie Jane Gilmour said the appointments address increasing demands in the workforce-development area, including popular training programs for careers in the natural gas industry offered through the Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center, a collaboration between Penn College and Penn State Cooperative Extension.
Chesapeake Energy Supports Welding Technology at Penn College

Penn College will expand its opportunities in welding education, thanks to a donation from Chesapeake Energy Corp. Chesapeake Energy presented the college with a check for $25,000 to purchase an engine-driven Lincoln welder, as well as a pipe beveling machine and associated supplies. Chesapeake also donated a supply of pipe for use in welding education.
MSETC Issues Statewide Workforce Needs Assessment

The Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center has released a study assessing the direct workforce needs required to support Marcellus Shale development in Pennsylvania from 2011-14. The total number of direct jobs needed to keep pace with the growth of the industry is expected to range from 18,596 to 30,684, including 9,800 to 15,900 new positions. The study expands two prior regional studies published by the MSETC, a collaborative venture between Penn College and Penn State Cooperative Extension. It outlines the key occupations associated with natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale region of Pennsylvania, as well as the number of direct jobs that will be needed to bring a gas well into production between 2011 and 2014.
Marcellus Measurement Scholarship Established

The positive experience of working with faculty and students at Penn College has inspired a Williamsport man to start an endowed scholarship fund at the college. Ryan A. English has presented a check to Penn College to establish the Marcellus Measurement Scholarship Fund. The scholarship targets support to students in the college’s electronics and computer engineering technology majors. Any full- or part-time students in either the bachelor-degree or associate-degree majors in electronics and computer engineering technology may apply for an award from the Marcellus Measurement Scholarship Fund if they have completed at least two semesters of study with a minimum grade-point average of 2.5. The first award from the scholarship will be made this fall.
Workshop Helps Educators Chart Gas Industry's 'Career Pathways'

K-12 educators attended the Outreach for K-12 Office's “Career Pathways in Marcellus Shale” at Penn College on Monday to learn about job opportunities that might be in their students’ futures. The event featured talks by Bud Rutherford, an industrial technology consultant for Workforce Development & Continuing Education at the college; Diane Bubb of the local Pennsylvania CareerLink Office; Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management; and Amy P. Toole, assistant professor of chemistry, followed by a tour of Penn College majors that relate to natural gas careers and a tour of companies serving the natural gas industry.
Lt. Gov. Cawley on Hand for Local Gathering of Marcellus Commission

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley was among those attending a gathering of the Governor's Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission on Penn College's main campus Tuesday evening. The lieutenant governor chairs the commission, which assembled in the Thompson Professional Development Center for dinner, panel presentation, question-and-answer session and group discussion. Among its tasks are addressing the needs and impact of natural gas development on local communities; the group is to report its findings to Gov. Tom Corbett next month.
MSETC at Penn College Trains OSHA Oil, Gas Inspectors

The Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center at Penn College recently delivered training for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s National Training Institute. The objective of the OSHA 3000 course is to familiarize OSHA compliance officers with the processes used in the extraction of oil and gas. It was presented by Jeffrey F. Lorson, director of MSETC workforce training, and Douglas Mehan, director of health, safety and environmental for Dallas-Morris Drilling Inc. “This is a great opportunity for MSETC and Penn College to help create additional value for this industry,” Lorson said.
Conservation Corps Visits Campus to Learn More About Natural Gas Careers

More than 20 members of the
Pennsylvania Conservation Corps – a statewide program that offers work experience, job training and educational opportunities to young people who complete a variety of projects on public lands within the commonwealth – visited Penn College on Monday to learn more about natural gas-related careers in the Marcellus Shale play. Corpsmembers and their crew leaders attended an industry overview in the Center for Business & Workforce Development, visited the welding laboratories in the Avco-Lycoming Metal Trades Center, had lunch in the Keystone Dining Room, and traveled to the Schneebeli Earth Science Center for a tour and a visit to the riverside training ground for heavy construction equipment majors. Another PCC group is scheduled to follow a similar program when it visits Penn College on Friday.
