Mathematics Professor Has Paper Published

William Ma, professor of mathematics at Penn College, co-authored a paper that was published recently in a scholarly journal. The paper, titled “Möbius Invariant Metrics Bilipschitz Equivalent to the Hyperbolic Metric,” was published in June in Conformal Geometry and Dynamics, an electronic journal of the American Mathematical Society.

Mathematics Faculty Present at National Conference

Six members of Penn College’s mathematics faculty – Edwin G. Owens, Joanna K. Pruden, Sandy Carlson, Lauren Gordon, LeAnn M. Henry and Diana L. Kuhns – recently offered presentations at the annual conference of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. The conference, held in Washington, D.C., Nov. 20-23, featured more than 200 workshops and presentations for approximately 1,200 mathematics educators from the United States and Canada.

Retired Math Faculty Member Granted ‘Emeritus’ Honor

Robert G. Bowers Robert G. Bowers, retired professor of mathematics at Penn College, has been granted “professor emeritus” status by the college’s board of directors. The board voted unanimously Thursday to award the designation to Bowers, who was the 2007 recipient of the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award − the college’s highest level of recognition for a faculty member.

Math Professor’s Research Published in Journal of Analysis

William Ma William Ma, professor of mathematics at Penn College, has published two research papers jointly with a University of Cincinnati professor. The papers by Ma and David Minda, who is the Charles Phelps Taft professor of mathematics at the University of Cincinnati, appeared in The Journal of Analysis, Volume 15 (2007). This is a special volume containing the proceedings of the International Conference on Geometric Function Theory, Special Functions and Applications, held Jan. 2-5, 2006.

Math Professor Earns Student Nomination to ‘Who’s Who’

William Ma William Ma, a professor of mathematics at Penn College, was recently nominated by a former student for inclusion in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and Educators.”

Math Professor Presents Invited Talks in China

William Ma A mathematics professor at Penn College was invited by two Chinese institutes of higher education to give presentations this summer. On June 27, William Ma offered a talk titled “Hyperbolic metric in geometric function theory” at Beihang University in Beijing. On July 22, he presented “Hyperbolic metric and convex functions” at Yulin College in Yulin.

College Presents Distinguished Teaching Awards

Richards, Excellence in Teaching Award recipient Penn College presented Distinguished Teaching Awards to several faculty members during Saturday's Spring Commencement ceremonies held at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport. The college’s highest level of recognition for a faculty member − the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award, so named in 2006 for the college’s retiring vice president for academic affairs/provost − was bestowed upon Robert G. Bowers, professor of mathematics. Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented to Eugene M. McAvoy, assistant professor of English-composition, and David S. Richards, associate professor of physics.

Math Professor's Paper Published in Conference Proceedings

William Ma William Ma, professor of mathematics at Penn College, wrote a paper that was published recently in the book "Quasiconformal Mappings and their Applications." The book contains 13 main lectures from the International Workshop on Quasiconformal Mappings and their Applications, held Dec. 27, 2005, to Jan. 1, 2006, at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India.

Math Professor to Be Honored in 'Who's Who'

Nancy C. Bowers Nancy C. Bowers, associate professor of mathematics at Penn College, will be honored for the second consecutive year in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." Bowers' biography will be printed in the 10th edition of the book, to be published later this year, and also appeared in the book's ninth edition.
