Scholarship Established for Heavy-Equipment Students

A Baltimore-based heavy-equipment industry association has established a new scholarship fund at Penn College. The Mid-Atlantic Equipment Management Association Scholarship Fund will provide an annual award of $1,500 for a full-time student who has completed at least two semesters in Penn College’s heavy construction equipment technology-technician emphasis associate-degree major. "The Mid-Atlantic Equipment Management Association and its members are proud to help an up-and-coming technician obtain his or her goal,” said Rob Ermer, treasurer of MAEMA. “Our industry faces a critical shortage of competent technicians. This scholarship will help fill the need for these skilled positions in the future.”
More Students Eligible for Manufacturing Scholarship

A Bucks County company is reaffirming its long-standing relationship with Penn College through a revised scholarship agreement. Bracalente Manufacturing Co. Inc. will continue to provide an annual award of $1,000 to a Penn College student through the Bracalente Manufacturing Scholarship, which was established in 1996. However, the list of majors eligible to apply for the scholarship award has been expanded to cover students who are enrolled full time in the college’s manufacturing engineering technology bachelor-degree major, the automated manufacturing technology and machine tool technology associate-degree majors, and the machinist general certificate. The revised scholarship agreement also adds a selection preference for students who are residents of Bucks, Montgomery or Lehigh counties – in order to benefit students from communities near the company’s facility in Trumbauersville.
Williams Foundation Scholarship Established at Penn College

Williams, a natural-gas company based in Oklahoma, will support students at Penn College through a new scholarship fund at the college. Through its foundation,

has established the Williams Foundation Scholarship Fund. The fund will offer an annual award of $2,000 to a full-time student in one of Penn College’s associate-degree majors in diesel technology, electric power generation technology, electromechanical maintenance technology, electrical technology, or electronics and computer engineering technology.
Special Gift Helps Employee Campaign Set New Record

A faculty member’s donation has pushed the total of gifts to The Penn College Fund Employee Campaign to a new record. Steven R. Parker, assistant professor of physics, recently donated $1,664 to The Penn College Fund. Parker’s gift puts the total for the 2009-10 Penn College Fund Employee Campaign at $82,246 – about $600 over the old record, set in the 2008-09 campaign. Parker said he received the money as a travel stipend for a training session he conducted for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at Kirkwood Community College in Iowa.
J&M Construction Specialty Scholarship Established

A local construction company has established a scholarship at Penn College. Williamsport-based J&M Construction Specialty Inc., which will provide an annual award of $2,000 beginning in Spring 2010, has committed to provide the scholarship for three years. The J&M Construction Specialty Scholarship targets students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Construction and Design Technologies. “We’re pleased to be able to provide some financial assistance to students pursuing their education at Penn College,” said Robert Shearer, president of J&M Construction Specialty Inc. “We believe strongly in the quality of education Penn College provides and are happy to partner with them by establishing this scholarship.”
New Scholarship at Penn College Honors State Sen. Yaw

Military veterans attending Penn College can apply for awards through a new scholarship at the college established in honor of state Sen. Gene Yaw, R-23. College President Davie Jane Gilmour recently established the Senator Gene Yaw Scholarship through the Penn College Foundation. The fund will provide an annual award of $1,000, with preference given to military veterans who reside in the 23rd senatorial district. If there are no qualified applicants using those criteria, second preference will go to a student in the heavy construction equipment technology-operator emphasis associate-degree major at Penn College who resides in the 23rd senatorial district.
NRM Golf Outing Provides Enjoyment for Participants, Funds for Students

Participants in the ninth annual School of Natural Resources Management Scholarship Golf Outing recently enjoyed a near-perfect day at the White Deer Golf Course. Sunshine and an unseasonably cool breeze provided the ideal atmosphere at the 18-hole challenge course. Forty golfers participated in the scholarship fundraising event on Wednesday, July 8 – 14 of them current or retired Penn College employees.
School of Health Sciences Establishes Scholarship Fund

With nearly 1,400 students enrolled in the 2008-09 academic year, Penn College’s School of Health Sciences is the largest of eight academic schools at the college. Now, the School of Health Sciences has established a scholarship fund to provide financial support for more of its students. The School of Health Sciences Endowed Scholarship Fund has been seeded with $7,000 received over the past few years through gifts from alumni and other supporters directed to the school. Penn College’s Institutional Advancement Office is seeking donations toward building the fund to an endowment of at least $25,000, after which will it become a permanent source of scholarship awards.
Emergency-Need Scholarship Renamed to Memorialize Staff Member

A Penn College scholarship fund that provides awards to students facing emergency financial challenges has been renamed in honor of a member of the Financial Aid Office staff who died in January. The Financial Aid Emergency Need Scholarship, which was established by the Financial Aid Office staff in 2007, has been renamed the Mary Beth Saar Memorial Financial Aid Emergency Need Scholarship. The scholarship provides awards to Penn College students who have a financial emergency that may jeopardize their ability to remain as a college student. Saar worked as a financial aid specialist in federal programs from 2002 until her death on Jan. 23 at the age of 52.
