New Student Exhibit Opens in Bookmarks Café

A new exhibition of student work is on display in the Bookmarks Café at the Madigan Library. The exhibit features brochure covers completed for the Advanced Computer Graphics course taught this semester by Gary R. DiPalma, assistant professor of graphic design. The students created brochure designs for a man-made object; each brochure was divided into three sections. The first section stated the object’s significance; the second covered historical or background information, and the third showed how the object functions. The assignment was approached from a historical, cultural or technological point of view. The exhibition features work by Megan E. Cobb, Mallory L. Decker, Carly M. Dreibelbis, Amanda L. Eisner, Joseph Feminella, Noah B. Hennig, Suzanne M. La Forge, Jennifer L. Reeder, Ashten E. Schwalm and Kendall L. Whitmer. If you have any questions about the course, please contact DiPalma.
Mentorship Award Presented to Printing-Industry Firm, Employee

Penn College has presented a Mentorship Award to Christopher Kendig/Komori America Corp. for their continuing support of the college’s graphic communications program. Kendig, a district sales manager for the Tokyo-based Komori America Corp. – a premier manufacturer of sheet-fed and web offset printing presses – has worked with Penn College faculty, staff and students for the past six-plus years.
Students Win Competition at National Flexographic Conference

A team of four students from Penn College participated in the Flexographic Technical Association’s Annual Forum held in Orlando, Fla., May 2-6, where the group earned a first-place trophy. The team consisted of graphic communications technology student Angela M. Sampsell, DuBoistown; graphic communications management students Abby E. Gliem, Biglerville, and Ashlyn M. Hershberger, Hummelstown; and graphic design student Timothy A. Miller, Williamsport.
Graphic Design Students' Gallery Show Officially Opens

The Gallery at Penn College held an opening reception and gallery talk Tuesday evening for the student portfolio exhibit on display through May 7.
Sixteen students are showing more than 160 pieces of work they created while earning bachelor's degrees in graphic design. Hours for the remainder of the show are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and 2-8 p.m. Thursday.

Graphic Design Students to Exhibit Work in Gallery at Penn College

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Madigan Library, will host a student portfolio exhibit April 30-May 7. Sixteen students will exhibit more than 160 pieces of work they created during their studies toward earning bachelor's degrees in graphic design. The work includes stationery packages, brochures, magazine spreads, advertisements, posters, one-of-a-kind books, corporate-identity programs, and graphic design for packaging and the Web. An opening reception will take place in the gallery from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, and includes a 5:30 p.m. gallery talk. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
Local Schoolchildren Get Hands-On Lab Experience

About three dozen pupils from Lyter Elementary School in the Montoursville Area School District this week toured the Graphic Design area of the Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center. The schoolchildren, mentored by Penn College students and employees, engaged in a number of hands-on activities while on the first floor of the building's west wing.

Student-Created Dust Jackets Displayed at Bookmarks

An exhibition of book-jacket designs is on display at Bookmarks Café in the Madigan Library. The work is part of the student assignment completed for the first project in the Graphic Design for Point of Purchase course taught by Gary R. DiPalma, assistant professor of graphic design, this semester. Students were assigned two books by Graham Greene – "The Quiet American" and "The Third Man" – and were asked to design hardcover book jackets for a new edition of each. They also designed a point-of-purchase poster promoting the new editions. The images on display show the front covers and spines of the book jackets. Participating students are Barbara A. Gamma Epsilon Tau Inducts New Members

Gamma Epsilon Tau, a co-ed graphic communications and graphic design fraternity, welcomed seven new members on Dec. 9: Barbara Andreassen and Tim Miller (not pictured), Megan Pennington, Ashlyn Hershberger, Alison Beitz, Stacey Rupp and Chelsea Sanders. The new members each received an official membership certificate, along with a wallet card and fraternity T-shirt. There was a dinner after the ceremony, followed by photos for GET's new Web site.

Wildcat Events Board Wins Three Awards in Regional Competition

The Wildcat Events Board, among the organizations that plan campus activities for Penn College students, brought home three awards from the National Association for Campus Activities Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held Oct. 23-26 at the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center.
Graphic Communications Program Finalist for $50,000 Grant

The graphic communications program at Penn College has been selected as one of four finalists to receive a grant of equipment from the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation. "This grant and partnership with ICPF will provide many opportunities to acquaint students with the corrugated packaging and display sector through experiences in numerous courses," said James P. Lentz, associate professor of graphic communications. "Also, it will provide hands-on learning opportunities that will develop additional skills in our students and make them even more desirable as employees.”
