Use of Appliance Timers Latest 'Green Tip'
Nov. 18, 2009 - 12:14 p.m.
Many of our appliances are powered around-the-clock, when they don’t need to be. Energy can be saved without loss of convenience if select electrical devices are de-powered when not needed. Appliance timers are small, low-powered, plug-in items available at home improvement and other stores that can control any appliance that has a plug. Good examples of uses include: turn off wireless routers when everyone is asleep, turn off air purifiers when you are at work, turn off devices that use a remote control overnight so they don’t "stay alive" when not needed, turn on and off table lamps (with energy-efficient bulbs) in the evening for security. Everything will come back on automatically according to schedule. PCToday's green/energy-saving tips are provided by the college's Energy Conservation Special Committee; Richard C. Taylor, chair, provided this week's item.

Seasonal Tradition – The Giving Tree – Returns to Penn College
Nov. 13, 2009 - 11:16 a.m.
Although it is hard to believe, the holiday season is upon us. With this wonderful time of year comes a Penn College tradition: The Giving Tree. Sponsored by the Student Activities Office, The Giving Tree is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, organizations and offices from around the college to give a gift to one or more of 225 local children and youth. Beginning Monday, the tree will be located outside Student Activities (CC, Room 107). Information about children and youth in need is listed on each ornament.
To participate, please select an ornament from the tree and bring it to the CC Information Desk, where you will sign out the ornament for the child you selected. Take the ornament with you when you purchase the gift, place your selection in a gift bag and tape the ornament to the bag. Do not wrap the gift. If you wish, you can write your name, “Penn College” and a message to the child on the back of the ornament. Bring the gift to the desk by 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, to ensure timely delivery.
Please help make this holiday season a special one for a local child and participate in The Giving Tree! If you have any questions, please contact Sara Hillis, assistant director of student activities for student services and involvement, by

"The Mid-Atlantic Equipment Management Association and its members are proud to help an up-and-coming technician obtain his or her goal,” said Rob Ermer, treasurer of MAEMA. “Our industry faces a critical shortage of competent technicians.
