Pennsylvania College of Technology received funding to offer tuition scholarships to disadvantaged students pursuing practical nursing certificates.

The $6,521 grant was provided by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation Inc. as part of its LPN Student Assistance Program.

PHEF, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Center for Health Careers, created the program to provide a new source of financial support for disadvantaged students pursuing a degree or certificate in practical nursing from a Pennsylvania nursing school.

“This important funding will offer a number of very deserving individuals a much-needed boost toward becoming excellent contributors to our health-care system,” said Sharon G. Auker, director of nursing at Penn College.

According to program materials, the intent of these tuition scholarships is to encourage additional students to pursue a degree or certificate in nursing, targeting students who may come from a background that is not favorable to pursuing such an education and who may lack the academic courses needed to enroll in such a program.
