Penn College TV Series Receives ‘Communicator’ Award

The initial episode of Penn College’s “degrees that work.” series on public television, a co-production with WVIA-TV, has received an “Award of Distinction” in the documentary category of the 14th Annual Communicator Awards. The series highlights career fields identified by state and federal labor officials as important for future employment growth. The first episode profiled the field of nanotechnology, which involves the manipulation of atoms and molecules to spur product development and medical research.

College Will Sell One City Property If It Purchases Another

If Penn College is able to purchase a West Third Street property, it will sell a college-owned parcel on Dix Street in Williamsport, college President Davie Jane Gilmour and Mayor Gabriel J. Campana announced Wednesday.

Local Musician Visits Children's Learning Center

Alice “Allie” Weiler, who tunefully combines mirth and motivation through her music and video projects, paid a visit to the Children's Learning Center on Wednesday. An elementary-school counselor, Weiler is no stranger to Penn College: She performed at the CLC's 10th anniversary celebration in September 2004 and recently recruited students in the college's mass media communication major to assist with producing a new DVD series.

ITS Warns of Increase in Reported Phishing E-Mails

Information Technology Services is aware of an increase in fraudulent e-mails making it through Penn College’s spam filter. These e-mails ask for credit card numbers, network usernames and passwords, birthdates, and other personal information that enable individuals to gain access to financial accounts, Web sites, files, etc. Employees and students are reminded that the college will never ask for sensitive information in an e-mail. Board Approves 2008-09 Budget/Tuition, Grants ‘Emeritus’ Status

The Pennsylvania College of Technology Board of Directors on Thursday approved a budget and established tuition and fees for 2008-09, granted “professor emeritus” status to a retired faculty member, welcomed a new board member and elected officers, and approved the roster for the Community Arts Center Board of Directors. The board also endorsed a voluntary contribution to the city of Williamsport and authorized the college administration to purchase property at 1359 W. Third St.

Budget, Tuition/Fees Approved for 2008-09 Academic Year
June 26, 2008 - 4:56 p.m.
The Pennsylvania College of Technology Board of Directors on Thursday approved an operating budget of $91,282,491 and a 4.7-percent increase in tuition for in-state students in 2008-09. The operating budget represents a 4.44-percent increase over 2007-08 and reflects a $250,000 decrease in Penn College’s state appropriation. Under the governor’s state budget proposal, The college will receive an appropriation of $12,659,000, which amounts to less than 14 percent of its operating costs.

Turbotville Boy Scouts Visit School of Hospitality
June 23, 2008 - 2:30 p.m.
Ten members of Boy Scout Troop 622 in Turbotville working on their merit badges in cooking visited Penn College's School of Hospitality on Monday. The boys, accompanied by Assistant Scoutmaster Albert Mabus and two other chaperones, are required to learn about three positions in the food-service industry. They spent the morning at Eder's Ice Cream near Montoursville before touring the college's kitchens with Fred W. Becker, dean of hospitality, and learning about the rewards – and hard work – of culinary careers.

New Episode of Career-Awareness Series to Air on WVIA

The second episode of the “degrees that work.” television series, a co-production of Penn College and WVIA-TV, is set to premiere on the public-television station at 7:30 p.m. June 29. The series’ newest episode focuses on welding, highlighting the variety of careers available from the viewpoints of artistic welder Mike Patterson, an alumnus of Williamsport Area Community College, adjunct faculty member and entrepreneur; and Jennifer Brinkley-Cruz, a 2005 Penn College alumna and manufacturing specialist for Toyota.

Stop to Smell the Roses

During a stroll through the Victorian House gardens, a child from Penn College’s Children’s Learning Center stops to smell the flowers. Temperatures in the low 80s coupled with low humidity on Friday made for a perfect opportunity to take in the scenic beauty on campus.
