College Appoints Director of Food Services

Cristen L. “Crissy” Matter has been appointed director of food services at Penn College. Matter, who has been serving as interim director for the department since November, is responsible for all food-service operations within the college. This includes nine dining facilities, vending operations, meal plans and supervision of the Food Services staff and management team.

Lecture Series, Scholarship to Memorialize Faculty Member, Former Council Chair

David A. London, 57, an associate professor of speech communication/composition in the Communication and Literature Department within the School of Integrated Studies at Penn College, died Saturday, May 3. London, who was also a former chair of College Council, began his employment with the college in January 1990. President Davie Jane Gilmour said the college’s “My Last Words” lecture series will be renamed the “David London My Last Words Lecture Series” in his honor. In addition, the school and the department will establish a student scholarship in London’s name through the Penn College Foundation.

English Faculty Member’s Paper Published in Online Journal

Laura M. Dickinson, associate professor of English-composition at Penn College, recently had a paper published in an online journal. The paper, titled “The Monster in the Jungle: Lost and the 21st Century American Gothic,” was published in Lost Online Studies, Volume 2.1.

Penn College Students, Instructor Conquer Lehigh Valley Half Marathon

Students
Tracey E. Brewbaker, Beth A. Snoddy and Michael D. Womelsdorf and instructor Emily B. Miller all competed in the Lehigh Valley Half Marathon on Sunday, April 27. Brewbaker and Snoddy are physical fitness specialist students who will graduate in May; Womelsdorf is a returnee to the half marathon and soon will graduate from Penn College with the technology management degree. All three students are members of the Wildcat cross country team, and Miller is the lab supervisor and instructor in the physical fitness specialist major. Official race times were Brewbaker, 1:46:21; Snoddy, 1:52:08; Womelsdorf, 1:32:54; and Miller, 2:14:02. Congratulations to all for a job well-done.

Workforce-Development Model Showcased at ‘Innovation’ Conference

Two representatives of a much-heralded workforce-training network administered by Penn College outlined the program’s structure and successes during a recent conference in Denver, Colo. Thomas J. Venditti, statewide director of the Workforce & Economic Development Network of Pennsylvania, and Larry L. Michael, executive director of workforce and economic development at Penn College, spotlighted the program for educators attending the Innovation 2008 Conference in March.

Avionics Professor Assumes Leadership Post, Receives Certification

An associate professor of avionics at Penn College’s Lumley Aviation Center continues his long-standing service to renowned organizations in the field, accepting an offer to serve as executive director of the Association for Avionics Education. In addition, Thomas D. Inman recently was among the first in the country to pass a new national certification test on radio-communications standards for technicians.

Children’s Learning Center Director Is ‘Outstanding Early Educator’

Karen Woland Payne, director of the Children’s Learning Center at Penn College, was named the Central Susquehanna Association for the Education of Young Children’s “2008 Outstanding Early Educator.” Payne, a longtime member and former president of the association, received the honor during the group’s annual conference, held April 5 on the Penn College campus.

Physics Faculty Member Earns Distinguished Service Award

David S. Richards, associate professor of physics at Penn College, was recently honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the Central Pennsylvania Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Richards served as president of CPS-AAPT in 2006 and as vice president in 2005. He just completed his term as immediate past president. As vice president, he organized the group’s 2006 conference, held at Penn College.
