Penn College TV Series Receives ‘Communicator’ Award

The initial episode of Penn College’s “degrees that work.” series on public television, a co-production with WVIA-TV, has received an “Award of Distinction” in the documentary category of the 14th Annual Communicator Awards. The series highlights career fields identified by state and federal labor officials as important for future employment growth. The first episode profiled the field of nanotechnology, which involves the manipulation of atoms and molecules to spur product development and medical research.

Retired Math Faculty Member Granted ‘Emeritus’ Honor

Robert G. Bowers, retired professor of mathematics at Penn College, has been granted “professor emeritus” status by the college’s board of directors. The board voted unanimously Thursday to award the designation to Bowers, who was the 2007 recipient of the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award − the college’s highest level of recognition for a faculty member.

Automotive Faculty Member Shares Insight With Radio Audience

Jaenke, assistant professor of automotive technology, about fuel efficiency in the face of high gasoline prices. Matt James' two-part News Focus interview is scheduled to air in two-minute segments at 6, 8 and 10 p.m. over the next two Saturdays (June 28 and July 5).

Economics Professor Presents Paper on Child Labor

At the annual conference of the Pennsylvania Economic Association, Abdul B. Pathan, professor of economics at Penn College, presented a paper regarding child labor. Pathan’s paper, “Child Labor in Developed and Developing Nations: Some Comparisons,” discussed how child labor was and still is being used by various businesses in many countries to save money and make profit under exploitative situations.

Paramedic Instructors Earn Regional EMS Honors

Brady L. Breon and Steven A. Wilson, both faculty members in the Penn College paramedic program, were honored recently at the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council banquet at the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport. Breon was recognized as the “EMS Instructor of the Year,” and Wilson was named the “Rescue Technician of the Year” for Lycoming County.

College’s IT Vice President Among Presenters at ‘Portal’ Conference

Penn College’s “myPCT” intranet for employees and students was the subject of a presentation by the college’s vice president for information technology during the recent “Portal 2008: Measurement and Assessment” conference in Gettysburg. More than 160 people from 80-plus institutions attended the June 3-6 conference, which featured panel discussions and sessions about shared-information portals in higher education – including Jim Cunningham’s presentation of “Campus Portals, Take Two: Moving Forward With Online Collaboration and Social Networking.”

College Announces Office Integration, Staffing Changes

Penn College will combine its Admissions and Financial Aid Offices to enhance the services it provides to students, and the college has announced staffing changes resulting from the new office structure. Effective June 4, Dennis L. Correll, who had been director of financial aid since 2004, assumed the new position of associate dean of admissions and financial aid. Earlier this year, the college‘s admissions director since 1975, Chet D. Schuman, declared his intent to retire in June 2009.

Computer Science Faculty Member Earns Doctorate From Penn State

Nicholas A. Vonada, associate professor of computer science in Penn College's School of Business and Computer Technologies, recently earned a doctorate in adult education and instructional systems from The Pennsylvania State University. Vonada’s dissertation was about students – particularly nontraditional students and those enrolled in distance learning – that attend the college through the federally funded Trade Adjustment Act program, which provides educational support to workers who lose their jobs due to the impact of foreign imports.
