Poinsettia Sale to Begin Monday at ESC Greenhouse

The annual poinsettia sale begins Monday (and runs through Thursday, Dec. 17) at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center greenhouse near Allenwood. This is reported to be one of the most vibrant crops in some time, and the School of Natural Resources Management invites shoppers to "come see the beautiful new colors we have this year." Hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; the greenhouse will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 for the holiday. Business is on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be no early sales.

Thursday Events Open Gallery's Exhibition of Indian Art

"Erasing Borders 2009: Exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art of the Diaspora,” the latest presentation in The Gallery at Penn College, officially – and colorfully – opened Thursday evening. A reception, gallery talk and dance performance kicked off the exhibit, on display through Dec. 13 on the third floor of Madigan Library. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. The gallery will be closed Nov. 26-29 for the Thanksgiving break. All exhibits are free and open to the public.

2009 SLC 'Breaks Out' in Learning, Laughing

The Student Government Association thanks all of the students who participated in the Nov. 7 Student Leadership Conference, characterized as a "wonderful day full of information and laughter." Keynote speaker Kevin Prentiss, an Internet entrepreneur who encouraged his audience to view the campus as a "dance floor," spoke to students about using exisiting services to increase group engagement and foster retention in higher education. Sara Hillis, assistant director of student activities for student services and involvement, hosted a session on "Leadership with Personality," and recent Penn College alumni Tom Garrett and Andrew Christoffel (2008-09 SGA Executive Board members) held a brainstorming roundtable on how campus leadership can help in life outside of college. Former SGA President Scott Elicker wrapped up the day with a closing speech. Upcoming graduate Micah Metzel – who provided the photographs above – was awarded a plaque for his dedication and devotion to SGA. The Student Government Association encourages all students to keep an eye out for next year’s conference!
Student-Organized Sale Showcases Global Artisans' Unique Wares

Human services students at Penn College are helping the world's working poor through a public sale of handcrafted goods in the Bush Campus Center. The students arranged a Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale, which includes a variety of unique handmade items from around the globe.

Penn College Students Awarded Scholarships After ‘Rodeo’ Victories

Two Penn College students were awarded a total of $2,500 in scholarships following the annual Precision Heavy Construction Equipment Rodeo – a popular event won this year by students from the college’s School of Natural Resources Management. Penn College students captured the overall title at the Oct. 25 event, which was held at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center, 10 miles south of the college’s main campus in Williamsport. Always an exciting event – open to the public and held in conjunction with Open House on the college’s campuses – the rodeo has been sponsored by the Service and Operation of Heavy Equipment Association student organization since 1983. Derek E. Adams, of Harrisburg, enrolled in heavy construction equipment technology: Caterpillar equipment emphasis, was awarded $1,500, and Shea O. Reiley, a technology management major from Williamsport who serves a president of the sponsoring organization, received a $1,000 scholarship.
Counseling Services to Participate in Suicide Survivors' Program

Penn College Counseling Services is sponsoring a local conference site for the 11th annual National Survivors of Suicide Day from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Professional Development Center's Tiadaghton Room. Counselors Mary Lee Kelly and Michael S. DiPalma will be involved in the observance, which includes a live simulcast by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The afternoon will include emotional support, information about resources for healing, and a question-and-answer session with survivors and mental health professionals.

Library Forum Puts Focus on Fitness

The role of personal responsibility in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding the risk factors that can spell an early demise was outlined by Judy Quinti, an assistant professor of fitness and lifetime sports at Penn College, in a Thursday forum in Madigan Library's second-floor reading loft. The speaker, joined by Lynne Maietta, of Blue Health Solutions, was the latest in the college library's informative series of free, public forums held on a variety of topics.

Students to Auction Chocolate Houses for Habitat for Humanity

Students at Penn College will auction their works to benefit Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity during the School of Hospitality’s annual Food Show and Chocolate House Auction on Dec. 4.
Recent ESC Bloodmobile Visit Exceeds Goal

The American Red Cross reports a successful recent Bloodmobile visit to the Schneebeli Earth Science Center: Forty-one pints were collected, surpassing the donation goal of 35 pints; 17 people were first-time donors. As each pint of blood collected benefits three people, a total of 123 patients will be helped by the Oct. 14 collection. Dennis F. Ringling, lead forestry professor in the School of Natural Resources Management, coordinated the blood drive.
