Pennsylvania College of Technology students raised more than $1,600 for Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity during the annual “House for a Home” chocolate house auction Dec. 5. The event was held during the college’s Food Show, which showcases final projects of students from several School of Hospitality classes.

Fourteen chocolate houses – made by students enrolled in Principles of Chocolate Works – were offered for silent auction. Students also created a variety of holiday cakes, cookie trays, candy boxes and gingerbread houses, which were sold in a live auction by Scott Younkin, of Linden, who volunteers his time for the charity event.

Food Show projects were judged by chefs Paul Burkholder, corporate chef of Furmano Foods; Elizabeth Long-Furia, owner, and Dennis Eckrote, executive chef, of Elizabeth’s: An American Bistro; and Samuel A. Morgante, executive chef, Penn College Food Services.

For her chocolate house, Allyson J. Roan, of Pennsylvania Furnace, won the Chef Eugene Mattucci Best of Show Award, named in honor of the late chef, who owned Mattucci’s Willow Café in Mount Carmel and was a longtime School of Hospitality Advisory Committee member and Food Show judge.

Artistic Buffet Decoration
First place: Stephanie M. Davis, of Ford City, and Alicia J. Neubert, of Great Meadows, N.J. (ice sculpture); second place: Warren B. Christman, of Blandon (tallow sculpture); third place: Nicole Marie Iannarino (salt-dough sculpture); honorable mention: Noah C. Bech, of Philadelphia (two mentions: tallow sculpture and bread-dough sculpture).

Cakes and Decorations
First place: Samantha A. James, of Alexandria; second place: Jaimie S. Burns, of Roaring Spring; third place: Noah C. Bech, of Philadelphia; honorable mention: Andrea M. Hamilton, of Shunk.
