Pennsylvania College of Technology dental hygiene students Carly S. Determan, of East Stroudsburg, and Olivia G. Jekielek, of Punxsutawney, examine a child in the college’s Dental Hygiene Clinic. Community volunteers and Pennsylvania College of Technology students and faculty treated 37 children on Feb. 5 as part of the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association’s statewide Sealant Saturday initiative.

The crew of volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental hygiene students placed 164 sealants, gave 37 dental screenings and provided 36 fluoride varnish treatments in the college’s Dental Hygiene Clinic – approximately $5,500 worth of free dental care. Children and their parents participated in health-related educational activities devised by students.

The event was staffed by two dentists, 12 dental hygienists and 27 Penn College senior dental hygiene students.

Program supporters include the Northcentral Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association, Dentsply and Premier Dental.
