Penn College to Host International Event for Automotive Teachers

A group of North American automotive instructors will gather this month at Penn College, home to the industry’s oldest continually operating, postsecondary program in the United States.
Ending three years of preparation that began with the institution’s approval as the event venue, the college and its School of Transportation Technology will host the 35th annual conference of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers from July 21-25. It will be the first such campus get-together since the college was the site of NACAT’s silver-anniversary conference in July 1998.

'Japan Juxtaposed' Exhibit Opens Tuesday

“Japan Juxtaposed: Traditional Textiles/Modern Images," the first exhibit of the 2008-09 academic year, opens Tuesday in The Gallery at Penn College (Madigan Library, third floor). The exhibit, which begins with a sushi-and-sake reception in the gallery from 5-7 p.m., features textiles from the personal collection of Joseph E. LeBlanc, instructor of physics, and photographs of modern-day Tokyo by Kirk Pedersen, an urban landscape artist on the faculty of California's Mt. San Antonio College. LeBlanc will offer a gallery talk at 5:30 Tuesday. The exhibit, represented at left by a detail of a scarf and Pedersen's neon look at Japan's largest city, is open to the public and runs through Aug. 6. Hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.

Gallery's Initial Exhibit Enhanced by Hands-On Activities

The season's opening exhibit at The Gallery at Penn College will be supplemented by a number of activities. A hands-on lecture, "Japanese Culture as Seen Through Textiles," will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the Madigan Library by Susan Ball Faeder, a quilter and merchant who has frequently traveled to Japan. A workshop, "Stitched Shibori on Pashmina Scarves," will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, July 25, in the library. Instructor Sandy Trimble will teach students about traditional Japanese Shibori stitches and techniques; space is limited, and registration and fees apply. Reception Offers Sweet Final Project, Honors Scholarship Donors

The Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation and the School of Hospitality combined efforts recently to offer a reception honoring those who have established scholarships at the college, at the same time providing a unique capstone project for students in the baking and pastry arts major.

The Gallery at Penn College Announces 2008-09 Exhibit Season

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Madigan Library, will open its 2008-09 slate in July with “Japan Juxtaposed: Traditional Textiles/Modern Images.” It is the first of 11 exhibits for the academic year, which represent a wide variety of expression.

W.T.I. Alumni Gather for Eighth Annual Reunion

About 180 people – including 110 Williamsport Technical Institute alumni – visited campus Friday during the eighth annual reunion for graduates of Penn College's earliest predecessor. Besides reuniting with friends and former classmates, W.T.I. alumni toured the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood and heard about the college's Stage X building program from Barry R. Stiger, vice president of institutional advancement.

School of Health Sciences Hosts Two Summer Learning Experiences

Penn College's School of Health Sciences recently held two summer camps for high school students interested in exploring a career in a health-care profession: the second annual EMT/Paramedic Camp on June 6-8, and the eighth annual Health Careers Camp from June 11-13.

Forestry Youth Camp Held at Earth Science Center

Area Boy Scouts experienced the outdoor laboratory of Penn College's Schneebeli Earth Science Center during Forestry Youth Camp from June 11-13. The Allenwood-area campus offered a variety of fun and informative hands-on activities for a dozen 14- to 16-year-olds, including an introduction to forest measurements, global positioning, forest-fire management, kiln-drying of lumber, wildlife appreciation, a look at Pennsylvania's rich forest history and archery instruction.

Outreach for K-12 Hosts Governor's Institute

Teams of educators from school districts and career and technology centers across the state are on campus this week for the Governor’s Institute on Career Education and Work, facilitated by Penn College’s Outreach for K-12 Office. With guidance from experienced mentors, the teams are working to develop strategies to implement the state’s Career Education and Work Standards into their curricula.
