Even in Tough Times, Caterpillar Supports Penn College Students

The Caterpillar Foundation and its partnering dealerships have joined in a $42,000 donation to Penn College, the majority of which will sponsor students in three majors within the college’s School of Natural Resources Management.
“Despite these challenging economic times, our relationship with Caterpillar Inc. remains strong and productive,” said Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management at the college. “Our dealers continue to share ideas for curriculum development, donate equipment, and provide training and upgrading opportunities to our faculty and employment options to our students.”
Cummins Engine Donation to Benefit Students in Variety of Majors

Students enrolled in three majors within Penn College’s School of Natural Resources Management will benefit from the recent donation of a Cummins Inc. diesel engine. The 4.5-liter, 170-horsepower QSB engine was donated by Cummins Bridgeway LLC, the leading distributor for Cummins Inc., the largest manufacturer of diesel engines and power-generation equipment in the United States. The engine, which meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3 emission standards, was ordered and used by Cummins’ Engineering Department to develop and test its product line.
Williams Foundation Scholarship Established at Penn College

has established the Williams Foundation Scholarship Fund. The fund will offer an annual award of $2,000 to a full-time student in one of Penn College’s associate-degree majors in diesel technology, electric power generation technology, electromechanical maintenance technology, electrical technology, or electronics and computer engineering technology.
Four Power-Generation Students Awarded Industry Scholarships

Four electric power generation technology majors at Penn College have each been awarded $2,500 from the Electrical Generating Systems Association, continuing the institution’s seven-year streak of consecutive scholarship honorees. Included among the 12 David I. Coren Memorial Scholarship recipients for the 2009-10 academic year are John J. Albany, Garnet Valley; George D. Bopst, Westminster, Md.; Jason M. Hirtzel, Colden, N.Y.; and Kyle Norek, Portville, N.Y.
H.O. Penn Honored for 10-Year Partnership With Penn College

A regional Caterpillar dealer has been honored by Penn College for its 10-year commitment to students and faculty in the School of Natural Resources Management. During a recent advisory meeting of dealers at the college’s Thompson Professional Development Center, Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management, presented representatives of H.O. Penn Machinery Inc. with a plaque honoring "10 years of participation in the Caterpillar Excellence Fund Grant to provide student sponsorships, instructional materials, technical equipment, curriculum development and faculty development funds in support of the Diesel Equipment Technology programs."
Students Again Beneficiaries of Caterpillar, Area Dealerships

The Caterpillar Foundation and a network of regional dealerships have combined for a $143,500 donation to Penn College, which – exclusive of equipment and technical support – brings to more than $1.6 million the total contribution since the Fall 1994 semester. “Caterpillar Inc. continues to generously contribute to our students’ education – through scholarships, sponsorships and donations,” said Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management. “The dealers and the CAT Foundation allow us to continue to do what we do best: provide high-quality technical education to the heavy-equipment technicians of tomorrow. We couldn’t ask for a better partnership!”
Students, Faculty Receive Power-Generation Training in Florida

Three Penn College students and an instructor of diesel technology technology/heavy construction equipment recently traveled to Florida to attend a power-generation convention and Electrical Generating Systems Association School. School of Natural Resources Management faculty member Paul A. Zenga accompanied students Benjamin G. Anderson, of Kane, and Matthew T. Churico, electrical power generation technology majors; and Joshua E. Henne, enrolled in the heavy construction equipment technology: technician emphasis major, to the 20th anniversary POWER-GEN International Convention on Dec. 2 at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center.
Power Generation Student Awarded Industry Scholarship

A Penn College student was chosen by the Electrical Generating Systems Association as one of a dozen David I. Coren Memorial Scholarship recipients for the 2008-09 academic year. Jacob D. Schaeffer, an electric power generation technology student from Westminster, Md., was awarded $2,500 from EGSA, an international trade association made up of more than 600 companies throughout the United States and a dozen other countries. Headquartered in Boca Raton, Fla., the association is the world’s largest organization dedicated to on-site power generation.
Penn College Students, Instructor Attend Power-Generation School

Students and a faculty member from Penn College recently attended the Electrical Generating Systems Association On-Site Power School in New Orleans, participating in training sessions and meeting potential employers among the key industry representatives that attended. The group – five students in the electric power generation technology major and Jon W. Hart, instructor of electrical technology – received four days of training and attended a convention/trade show at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Students who participated are Joseph W. Caplinger, Williamsport; Matthew B. Forbes, Mifflinburg; Adam R. Petak, Mineral Point; Patrick J. Rodack, Butler; and Steven A. Sample, Lewisburg.
Financial Support From Caterpillar, Area Dealers Nears $1.5 Million
