Sealant Saturday Event Honored as Outstanding Initiative

Penn College was recognized recently for an annual program that offers dental sealants to uninsured and underinsured children. The Northcentral Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center presented its Outstanding Oral Health Initiative award to the college for its involvement in the 2009 Sealant Saturday event. Each February, as part of the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association’s statewide Sealant Saturday program, Penn College’s dental hygiene clinic opens its doors to children ages 7 to 15 to provide free oral screenings, sealants, fluoride treatments and education. To make the event possible, 20 dental hygienists, two dentists and 31 Penn College dental hygiene students (as well as faculty) volunteered their time.
Women's Volleyball Team Honors Senior Members

A crowd of more than 200 people watched in Bardo Gymnasium on Thursday night as the Penn College women's volleyball team defeated Penn State Abington and said a tearful "goodbye" to seniors Alyssa M. Covas and Ashley D. Oswald. Covas, of Pottsville, enrolled in the applied health studies: occupational therapy assistant concentration, and Oswald, of Altoona, a dental hygiene student, were joined by family members and introduced by coach Bambi Hawkins. All varsity Wildcat teams – including women's volleyball, which defeated Abington 25-4, 25-9 and 25-9 – pay tribute to their graduating members during the regular season.

100 Percent of Dental Hygiene Graduates Pass National Boards

All 27 of the most recent graduates of Penn College’s dental hygiene major passed the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. The purpose of the Dental Hygiene Examination is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dental hygienists who seek licensure to practice.
Dental Hygiene Alumni Gather for Program's 30th Anniversary

Penn College's dental hygiene major celebrated its 30th anniversary Friday, three decades during which 939 bachelor's and associate degrees were awarded to 774 graduates – and the program's first instructor rose to become the institution's president. More than 130 alumni attended the daylong observance, which offered continuing education; lunch at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant; dessert and reminiscence with President Davie Jane Gilmour (whose memories included teaching oral anatomy in the geology lab during the program's earliest days); the opportunity for former classmates to pore, laugh and wince over yearbooks and old photographs; and a Hiawatha riverboat cruise. Representatives of nearly every class were on hand, from 10 members of the inaugural Class of 1979 (including one who traveled from Maine) to 2009 grad Kelly A. Braun, a commencement speaker earlier this month.
Dental Hygiene Students, Instructor Return From Nicaragua

Three students – Ann Marie Prosser, of Elizabethtown; Lauren Whitcraft, of Mountville; and Nadena M. Nykaza, of Jermyn – and one faculty member, Rhonda J. Seebold, spent a week (Feb. 20-27) in Managua, Nicaragua, working with students and parents of La Escuelita to educate them on proper dental hygiene and to perform basic dental care. Photos of the trip, during which the students tended to 112 children, were provided by Prosser and Seebold.
‘Sealant Saturday’ Event at Penn College Serves 65 Children

Students Provide Dental Care to Poor in Nicaragua

Six Penn College students and two faculty members traveled to Nicaragua to provide dental care to a group of indigent children. The college group comprised dental hygiene: health policy and administration students Maria A. Bova, of Bethlehem; Joni K. Brickner, of Carlisle; Mallory L. David, of Altoona; Gina L. Everhart, of Lancaster; Teresa A. McBreen, of Malvern; and Laura L. Taylor, of Hanover, as well as Mary Jo Saxe, associate professor of dental hygiene, and Rhonda J. Seebold, part-time instructor of dental hygiene.
School of Health Sciences Hosts Two Summer Learning Experiences

Dental Hygiene Program Raises Funds for Recent Alumna

Penn College’s Dental Hygiene Program raised $4,000 for a recent graduate who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Mindy J. Crawford, who earned an associate degree in dental hygiene in 2004, was diagnosed with having at least three anaplastic astrocytomas (tumors) in her brain, all inoperable because of their locations.
