Student Awarded PA Dental Hygienists’ Association Scholarship

A dental hygiene student at Penn College was recently named the 2011-12 recipient of the Bailey/Hollister Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association. Amber L. March, a sophomore from Montoursville, received a $1,500 scholarship from the association. She is the only recipient from among 12 dental hygiene education programs in Pennsylvania.

Kathrine E. Dixon Chosen as 'Student of the Month'

Kathrine E. Dixon Kathrine E. Dixon, a dental hygiene: health policy and administration concentration major from Houtzdale, has been chosen as the October “Student of the Month” by the Student Government Association at Penn College. Dixon, set to graduate in 2014, is a Resident Assistant in on-campus housing, a participant in the Penn College Presidential Leadership Program, president of the college’s Earth Smart Club and the first recipient of the Tracy A. Garis Memorial Scholarship. “One major strength is Kathrine’s mature, conscientious approach to her academic work,” her faculty nominator wrote. “Not only were her assignments submitted on time and in a manner consistent with the directions, her work was consistently superior. The level of her work bespoke her attentiveness in class.”

Dental Hygiene Director Serves on AHEC Board of Directors

Shawn A. Kiser The director of the dental hygiene program at Penn College recently began his tenure on the Northcentral Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center Board of Directors. Shawn A. Kiser was appointed to a three-year term on the board, during which he will also serve on the center’s personnel committee. The Northcentral Area Health Education Center is a government-funded, not-for-profit organization consisting of service-oriented staff, board members and community partners whose goal is to provide and promote health-care education to underserved communities through the recruitment and retention of health-care providers and the development of a quality workforce.

Student Earns Scholarship From ADHA Institute for Oral Health

Robin J. Gordon, a Penn College student enrolled in the dental hygiene: health policy and administration major, was awarded a scholarship from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Institute for Oral Health. Gordon, of Duryea, was named a recipient of the Crest Oral-B Laboratories Dental Hygiene Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year. Sponsored by Procter & Gamble, the scholarships are awarded to applicants at the baccalaureate-degree level who demonstrate the intent to encourage professional excellence and scholarship, promote quality research, and support dental hygiene through public and private education. Applicants must also demonstrate a dental hygiene grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale.

Penn College’s First ‘NEO Guys’ Enjoy Hands-On Experiences

NEO Guys Penn College recently hosted its inaugural Nontraditional Employment Opportunities (NEO) Guys event, exposing male teenagers to job opportunities in all areas and encouraging career choice based on interests and individual strengths. Seventh- and eighth-graders from North Penn High School in Blossburg visited the college’s main campus in Williamsport on Thursday, May 26, attending intensive, hands-on workshops in dental hygiene and culinary arts.

Penn College Students Meet One Fundraising Challenge, Trigger Another

Student organizations at Penn College have met a fundraising challenge from the college president, spurring a new challenge to help endow a memorial scholarship fund. The Student Government Association and several other organizations rose to the challenge from Davie Jane Gilmour to raise $2,000 for the Tracy A. Garis Memorial Scholarship. That goal was met last week, and Gilmour will match that total with a personal donation of $2,000. Now, five members of the Penn College Foundation board of directors are stepping forward with a new proposition for students.

Dental Procedures Worth $5,500 Provided at Sealant Saturday Event

Sealant Saturday held Community volunteers and Penn College students and faculty treated 37 children on Feb. 5 as part of the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association’s statewide Sealant Saturday initiative. The crew of volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental hygiene students placed 164 sealants, gave 37 dental screenings and provided 36 fluoride varnish treatments in the college’s Dental Hygiene Clinic – approximately $5,500 worth of free dental care. Children and their parents participated in health-related educational activities devised by students.

Memorial Scholarship More Than Halfway to Goal

College president bolsters SGA fundraiser The president of Penn College has issued a fundraising challenge in support of a scholarship fund established by the Student Government Association at the college. President Davie Jane Gilmour announced that she will provide a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $2,000, if that amount is raised by Penn College student organizations for the Tracy A. Garis Memorial Scholarship. Garis, a dental hygiene major, Resident Assistant and Student Ambassador from Hellertown, was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 80 in Luzerne County on June 4. "The initiative displayed by establishing the scholarship in memory of Tracy is impressive in its own right, but what the student body has been able to achieve in just one semester is truly remarkable,” Gilmour said. “The level of support from across the Penn College community has led the student government leadership to set a goal of having the scholarship endowed by commencement. The matching challenge is just my way of helping them achieve their goal.”

Sealant Saturday Scheduled for Children 7-15 on Feb. 5

The Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association will present its ninth annual free Statewide Children’s Dental Hygiene Sealant Saturday on Feb. 5, with a local clinic at Penn College. Dental hygienist and dentist volunteers and dental hygiene students will provide free oral screening, sealants and education for children ages 7-15 in Penn College’s Dental Hygiene Clinic. Space is limited. Call 570-320-8007 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. any weekday to set up your child’s appointment for Sealant Saturday.

Penn College Presents Distinguished Alumni Award

Alumnus honored Penn College presented a Distinguished Alumni Award on Saturday to Dr. Angela S. Lutz, who practices dentistry at the Children’s Dental Centre of York. Lutz received a degree in dental hygiene from Penn College in 1993. Later, she received a doctorate in dental medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She continued her education at the York Hospital, completing a one-year general practice residency, and then returned to the University of Pittsburgh for her pediatric residency.
