New Scholarship Honors Former Hartman Group President, Wife

Henry J. Stutz A new scholarship fund at Penn College honoring a Linden-area man and his wife will support students in the college’s business administration bachelor-degree majors. The Henry and Donna Stutz Scholarship Fund was established by The Hartman Group, a company consisting of The Hartman Agency Inc., Hartman Employee Benefits Inc. and Hartman Financial Services, operating out of offices in Williamsport, State College and Duncannon. The scholarship honors the former president of The Hartman Group and his wife. “Hank Stutz is very committed to a technical, knowledge-based approach to property and casualty insurance and to the development of knowledge within the insurance industry,” said Michael P. Gaetano, president of The Hartman Agency Inc. “His devotion to education in the industry is now further extended to a college scholarship fund to recognize him and his wife, Donna, in support of students at Penn College.”

School of Business and Computer Technologies Opens New Labs

Located on the second-floor east wing of the Breuder Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center and showcased at a Wednesday open house, the classroom/laboratory space includes a mock courtroom for paralegal studies/legal assistant students (Room E201), a Financial Markets Investment Lab (E258), a Web and Interactive Media Lab (E264) and a fully functional corporate boardroom (E200).

Faculty Member Performs Variety of Duties at Economic Conference

Gerald D. “Chip” Baumgardner, a faculty member in the college’s School of Business and Computer Technologies, presented a paper titled “Successful Cooperative Learning Strategies for the Economics Class” during the conference.

Alumnus Relishes LLB World Series Assignment

Alumnus Sam Ranck As league development manager and director of the Challenger Division for Little League Baseball and Softball, Sam Ranck has a wide scope of responsibilities. Faculty Member Among Principals in Economics-Education Initiative

Gerald D. 'Chip' Baumgardner A Penn College faculty member is part of a national initiative to enhance economics education at community colleges and other two-year institutions. Gerald D. “Chip” Baumgardner, an associate professor of business administration/management in the School of Business and Computer Technologies, traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., for an Economics at Community Colleges workshop to promote instructors’ use of innovative resources. The May 30-June 1 gathering marked the first phase of the project, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and aims to collaboratively improve economics education through relevant professional-development activities for faculty.

Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship Awarded

Madigan scholarship awarded A Loyalsock Township High School senior who has been active in community service projects throughout her high school years is the 2011 recipient of the Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship at Penn College. A selection committee chose Niesha J. Williams to receive this year’s award for the scholarship named in memory of the late wife of former state Sen. Roger A. Madigan. The selection was announced during Thursday's annual Student Government Seminar hosted at Penn College by Madigan’s successor, Sen. Gene Yaw. Williams will enroll in the business administration: management bachelor-degree major this fall at Penn College.

Board Chairman Emeritus, Wife Establish Scholarship Fund

Scholarship established A key figure in the development of Penn College and his wife have established a scholarship fund at the college. Former State Rep. Alvin C. Bush and his wife, Elizabeth, have established the Alvin Bush Family Scholarship. The fund, which the Bushes will build to an endowment of at least $25,000, will generate scholarship awards for business administration students from Lycoming County.

Class Project Uses Alumni Donations to Establish Scholarship Fund

A class project supported by alumni donations has resulted in a new scholarship fund at Penn College. In 2009, $1,500 from the pool of donations designated by alumni to support the School of Business and Computer Technologies was set aside as seed money for an annual project in the Principles of Management course. Those projects since have earned profits of $4,880, money that was used recently to establish the Small Business/Entrepreneurship Scholarship Fund. The fund also received $1,000 through the Penn College chapter of Students in Free Enterprise, which donated $500; the organization’s adviser, Dennis R. Williams, associate professor of business administration/management, made a matching gift.

Students, Faculty Participate in National Alpha Chi Convention

Two Penn College students and a faculty sponsor represented the institution’s Pennsylvania Xi chapter of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society for students seeking baccalaureate degrees, at its recent national convention. Amy S. Dibble, of Montoursville, and Nathan A. Hyde, of Jersey Shore – seniors majoring in business administration: banking and finance concentration – both presented papers at the convention, which was held March 31-April 2 in San Diego. Also attending was Gerald D. “Chip” Baumgardner, associate professor of business administration, the chapter’s voting faculty delegate. He also served as a judge for the student presentations in economics and was part of a delegation that traveled to a local elementary school to share in the Reading Is Fundamental program.

Accreditation Organization Pays Tribute to Penn College Professor

Terry A. Girdon A professor of management and head of the business administration department at Penn College recently was honored for his long and significant service to the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education. During the organization’s yearly conference, held March 29-April 1 in Las Vegas, Terry A. Girdon was presented with The John L. Green Award for Excellence in Business Education. The award annually honors an individual who has made significant contributions that advance the cause of academic quality in business education with specific attention to the IACBE.
