Penn College to Host Influential Graphic Designer

David Carson Penn College will host a lecture by American graphic designer David Carson, one of the most influential graphic designers of the 1990s, at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is presented as part of the college’s Graphic Design Speaker Series. Carson is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of experimental typography. The former art director for the magazine Ray Gun, Carson’s widely imitated aesthetic defined the so-called “grunge typography” era.

Gallery Exhibit to Feature Graphic Design Students’ Work

From April 29-May 13, The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Madigan Library, will host “Design: 2011,” a portfolio exhibition by seniors in the college’s graphic design major. A culminating project of their college curriculum, the students’ annual exhibition will feature posters, books, magazine spreads and logos. The gallery will host a Meet the Artist reception with students and faculty on April 29 from 4:30-6:30 p.m., with a gallery talk by Joanna K. Pruden, assistant dean of integrated studies-programs, beginning at 5:30. The gallery is open 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Graphic Design Students Gain Real-World Insight From Graduate

Alumnus Austin Hoyt conferences with graphic design students Graphic design students had the opportunity Thursday to ask questions about the job search and how the “real world” looks for young graphic design graduates through a Skype conference with 2006 Penn College alumnus Austin Hoyt. Hoyt, who is a freelance art director for advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather’s Manhattan office, wanted to discuss his experiences with all the current graphic design students. “He said he thought our program is one of the best that he knows of, and he is appreciative of his time here,” said Brian Flynn, assistant director of graphic design, who arranged the conference. Hoyt shared with students the struggles and successes of working in New York, the prestige of designing for such international brands as Coca-Cola, and tips for the job search.

An opening reception, including a gallery talk, was held Thursday evening. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. Student Leader Legacy Scholarship Awarded at Penn College

Megan R. Pennington Fundraising efforts by Penn College's Student Government Association have resulted in another scholarship award for a returning student. Megan R. Pennington, of Baltimore, was selected from a field of 18 applicants to receive a $1,000 Student Leader Legacy Scholarship award for the 2010-11 academic year. Outgoing SGA President Kyle M. Pfueller presented Pennington with a symbolic scholarship check at the 2009-10 Student Activities Awards Banquet on April 20. Pennington, active both on campus and off, is a junior in Penn College’s graphic design bachelor-degree major.

Penn College Degree Leads to Visible Success ‘Down the Road’

Traveling to and from her job as a graphic designer with Weis Markets, Trisha (Corey) Herrick gets to see her work on the rear of the grocery chain’s trucks rumbling along area roadways. “How fun to drive down the highway and see your design right in front of you,” said the Sunbury resident, whose latest project includes Valentine’s Day messages that playfully direct motorists to buy flowers or confections for their special someones.

Penn College to Add Bachelor’s Degree in Web Design, Multimedia

An innovative and industry-responsive bachelor’s degree, which combines time-tested, art-related education with sophisticated tools in Web design, will be offered later this year at Penn College. The web design and multimedia major is the newest of the college’s popular “two-plus-two” offerings, and is specifically fashioned for students who have completed associate-degree requirements in art or an allied field and wish to further their education in an online baccalaureate program. The curriculum – developed by Pat Coulter and Denise Leete, associate professors of computer science in the college’s School of Business and Computer Technologies – will be offered starting with the Fall 2010 semester.

New Student Exhibit Opens in Bookmarks Café

Students' exhibit in library cafe A new exhibition of student work is on display in the Bookmarks Café at the Madigan Library. The exhibit features brochure covers completed for the Advanced Computer Graphics course taught this semester by Gary R. DiPalma, assistant professor of graphic design. The students created brochure designs for a man-made object; each brochure was divided into three sections. The first section stated the object’s significance; the second covered historical or background information, and the third showed how the object functions. The assignment was approached from a historical, cultural or technological point of view. The exhibition features work by Megan E. Cobb, Mallory L. Decker, Carly M. Dreibelbis, Amanda L. Eisner, Joseph Feminella, Noah B. Hennig, Suzanne M. La Forge, Jennifer L. Reeder, Ashten E. Schwalm and Kendall L. Whitmer. If you have any questions about the course, please contact DiPalma.

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Madigan Library, will host a student portfolio exhibit April 30-May 7. Sixteen students will exhibit more than 160 pieces of work they created during their studies toward earning bachelor's degrees in graphic design. The work includes stationery packages, brochures, magazine spreads, advertisements, posters, one-of-a-kind books, corporate-identity programs, and graphic design for packaging and the Web. An opening reception will take place in the gallery from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, and includes a 5:30 p.m. gallery talk. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
