'Penn College Proud Showcase' to Open With Alumnus/Retiree’s Work

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of the college's Madigan Library, will host “Searching for Creativity,” a collection of works by Fred Gilmour, from May 16 to June 22. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place Tuesday, May 20, from 4:30-7 p.m., with a talk by the artist scheduled at 5:30. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
Artwork Familiar to 'Millionaires' Returns to Williamsport

A small work of art that is familiar to all who have called themselves “Williamsport Millionaires” has returned to the city after 45 years, and is on display in the Breuder Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center.
Thomas B. Mikan was a student in the sign-painting program at Williamsport Technical Institute, predecessor of Penn College, in the early 1960s when he designed the top-hat, cane-and-gloves logo that has been used ever since by Williamsport Area High School.
'Senior Sendoff' Held at College Store

Senior Sendoff held at the College Store The Alumni Association and College Store joined forces Monday and Tuesday for a Senior Sendoff, helping soon-to-graduate seniors make final preparations for commencement and laying the groundwork for a continuing relationship with Penn College. Students could pick up graduation announcements, caps and gowns in the store, then enroll in the association's online Alumni Community. At left, senior Kimber J. Diesel Students Afforded Instructive Look at Hybrid Coca-Cola Truck

Diesel majors in Penn College’s School of Natural Resources Management recently were given a close-up look at a hybrid vehicle, courtesy of the Coca-Cola Co. and an alumnus of the college’s predecessor institution. A Coca-Cola 2008 International 4300 series truck equipped with a hybrid-electric and automated drivetrain system was brought to the college’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center from the Bronx, N.Y., during a March 11 Career Fair and remained at the Allenwood area campus for the rest of that week.

Keith A. Boatman, a 1986 graduate of Penn College's immediate predecessor institution, was honored by the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce at its seventh annual Education Celebration. The Community Arts Center, a subsidiary of the college, was presented with the Business Partner in Education Award at the same event, held March 6 at the Holiday Inn Downtown.
Alumnus Guitarist to Open Concert Series at Gallery

Art and music combine in a fitting arena on Feb. 24 with an afternoon of classical guitar music to kick off “In Perfect Harmony: The Concert Series in The Gallery at Penn College.” Alphonse Ciaccio, a 1993 alumnus of the college, presents the series’ inaugural concert in the gallery, on the third floor of the college’s Madigan Library, at 2 p.m.
Erdly Memorial Scholarship Fund Established at Penn College

An alumnus has established a scholarship fund at Penn College to honor the memory of his late parents. Jeffrey L. Erdly, a 1972 graduate of predecessor institution Williamsport Area Community College, plans to make an annual award of $1,000 through the Carl and Bonnie Erdly Memorial Scholarship.
College Bestows Alumni Citizenship/Humanitarian Awards

Penn College has presented Alumni Citizenship/Humanitarian Awards to Diane L. Dorner and Lester J. Loner, both of Williamsport. The Alumni Citizenship/Humanitarian Award recognizes graduates of Penn College (and forerunners Williamsport Area Community College and the Williamsport Technical Institute) who provide distinguished community or volunteer service. The awards were presented during December Commencement ceremonies at the Community Arts Center.
Automotive Alumnus North America's Top Scorer on ASE Exam

An automotive graduate of Penn College has received the Technician of the Future award, sponsored by Mitchell 1 and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Colin N. Hoffard, of Willow Street, recognized for having the highest score in North America on the ASE exam, was presented with the honor during a Nov. 12 ceremony in Scottsdale, Ariz.
