Student’s Metal Art Helps Raise Funds for Cancer-Prevention Charity

Student's art benefits charity A charity drive to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation recently benefited from the artistry and technical skill of a Penn College student – Thomas D. Folino, of Centre Hall – who fabricated two pieces of metal art that were among more than 120 prizes raffled during a unique video gaming marathon.

Chesapeake Energy Supports Welding Technology at Penn College

Chesapeake Energy supports welding education Penn College will expand its opportunities in welding education, thanks to a donation from Chesapeake Energy Corp. Chesapeake Energy presented the college with a check for $25,000 to purchase an engine-driven Lincoln welder, as well as a pipe beveling machine and associated supplies. Chesapeake also donated a supply of pipe for use in welding education.

Three Students Among Medalists at National Vocational Competition

Penn College medalists Three Penn College students were among the medalists at SkillsUSA's 47th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference held June 19-24 in Kansas City, Mo. Placing third in their respective events were Aaron C. Dressler, Mount Pleasant Mills, Automotive Refinishing; Micah E. Hoover, Souderton, Welding; and Lewis D. Robinson, Bellefonte, Culinary Arts. Dressler is enrolled in the collision repair technology major, Hoover is a welding and fabrication engineering technology student, and Robinson is majoring in culinary arts and systems. Their bronze medals bring to 27 the total number of Penn College students who have placed in the top three spots in national competition over the years. Placing fourth in Collision Repair was Owen R. Boyle, of Bloomsbury, N.J.

Region's Vital Manufacturing Base Celebrated at Daylong Event

Biddle, K-12 project manager, in appreciative of the business's participation"Made in Central PA," a manufacturers' showcase of the products and career opportunities available in Penn College's nine-county back yard, was held Thursday on main campus. About a dozen people – including teachers and counselors from area high schools, as well as representatives of regional career and technology centers – attended. The group heard presentations and participated in roundtable discussions in Penn's Inn, lunched at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant and toured related academic majors. "Manufacturing in this country is not dead," reassured Donald O. Praster, dean of industrial and engineering technologies. "We have any number of companies who have hired – and continue to be interested in hiring – our graduates." Praster led a visit to welding, machining and automated manufacturing facilities, and assistant dean Bill Mack took the group through the plastics laboratories. Among participating manufacturers were Primus Technologies Corp., Videon Central, Ames True Temper, the Pennsylvania Hardwoods Development Council, Lewis Lumber Products Inc. and First Quality Products Inc. The keynote speaker was Lauren Bryson, statewide director of the Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center Network; closing remarks were delivered by David Whitten from Bingaman & Son Lumber Inc. and the Keystone Wood Products Association. The event was sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corp. and the college.

John Deere Provides Welding Scholarships at Penn College

Welding scholarships awarded Four Penn College students will receive scholarship awards of $3,000 each, thanks to The John Deere Foundation. Tyler S. Caldwell, of Manchester; Micah E. Hoover, of Souderton; Derek T. Ban, of Charlotte, N.C.; and Justin T. Nupp, of South Williamsport, are the recipients of awards from the John Deere Foundation Scholarship for 2011-12. All are expected to graduate in 2012 from the college’s four-year welding and fabrication engineering technology major.

Student Panelists, Lab Tours Enlighten Weld-Ed Guests

Included in the day’s activities and discussions were a tour of the college’s renovated welding facilities and an opportunity to ask questions of a panel of Penn College students about the transition from high school to a postsecondary welding program. Student panelists were Nicholas A. Anderson, Paul A. Boehret, Tyler S. Caldwell, Josie G. Drier and Muriah L. Musser, all pursuing bachelor’s degrees in welding and fabrication engineering technology. The summit, which also offered discussions of best practices and resources, was designed for welding educators, administrators and Tech Prep coordinators, and was sponsored by the National Center for Welding Education and Training (Weld-Ed) and co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Welding Educators.

Local AWS members Jim Fox, a retired member of the Penn College faculty, and Adam Steppe, a 1999 graduate and AWS chair, were among the judges for the separate high school and postsecondary contests.

Nicholas A. Anderson Chosen as 'Student of the Month'

Nicholas A. Anderson Nicholas A. Anderson, a welding and fabrication engineering technology major from Warren, is the Student Government Association's latest Student of the Month at Penn College. An active participant in Penn College's Greek community, he is the treasurer of his fraternity – Chi Phi – and serves as vice president of finance for the Inter-Fraternity Council. He also is a member of the American Welding Society chapter at the college.

College Receives Funding to Enhance National Welding Curriculum

Penn College received a grant to continue as a Weld-Ed Regional Center in establishing the National Center for Welding Education and Training. The college is one of 10 regional partners for the National Science Foundation project, which began in 2007 and is led by Lorain County (Ohio) Community College. Its region includes 12 states and the District of Columbia. Penn College is using its $52,241 portion of the 2010-11 NSF Weld-Ed funding to present workshops for welding educators and the welding industry, to work with industry to develop internships, and to disseminate curriculum materials to high schools and community colleges.

John Deere Foundation Renews Scholarship Support at Penn College

Welding scholarships awarded The John Deere Foundation has provided Penn College with another grant of $12,000 to support scholarships for students in the college’s welding and fabrication engineering technology bachelor-degree major and welding technology associate-degree major in 2010-11. For the second consecutive year, the John Deere Foundation is funding four scholarship awards of $3,000 each at Penn College. All four students receiving the awards are enrolled in the welding and fabrication engineering technology bachelor-degree major: Nathan F. Lott, Timonium, Md.; William J. Ebert, New Alexandria; Ryan P. McCollum, Warrington; and Christopher J. McKelvey, Marmora, N.J.
