Weatherization Training Center Expands to Meet Demand

Weatherization Training Center showcased For nearly 25 years, the Weatherization Training Center at Penn College has provided technical education and training to the professionals who implement programs helping low-income households reduce their energy consumption and costs. With an infusion of federal stimulus funds bolstering those efforts in Pennsylvania, the WTC is one of the first such training facilities nationwide to expand its operations in response to the growing demand fueled by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act support. The center held a Grand Opening on Wednesday, showcasing the enhanced facility for invited federal, state and local officials and training partners, who met with staff and toured the 16,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art instructional space on Reach Road in Williamsport. The Open House was featured in WNEP-TV and WBRE-TV newscasts Wednesday evening.

SPE, College Host Conference on Campus

Sixty-five people, representing 30 plastics companies, made a visit to Penn College’s campus Oct. 22 for an Extrusion Minitec (a mini technical conference). The program was a joint effort of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the college. Penn College students from plastics and polymer technology majors also attended as their schedules allowed, as did faculty from the majors and Plastics Manufacturing Center staff. The event featured eight technical speakers, four laboratory demonstrations, and ended with a reception.

Professional Development Certificate Course to Be Offered

Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College will offer a noncredit Professional Development Certificate course on Wednesdays, Oct. 21 through Nov. 25, for those who wish to improve their on-the-job relationship, problem-solving and time-management skills. Classes will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the Center for Business & Workforce Development on the main campus in Williamsport. The cost is $399. A spring session will be held on Mondays, March 8 through April 12, from 9 a.m.-noon.

College to Offer Social Networking for Business Workshop

Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College will offer an Introduction to Social Networking for Business workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The noncredit workshop will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Center for Business & Workforce Development on the main campus in Williamsport. The cost is $20, which includes a light lunch. A spring session will be offered on Tuesday, March 2.

Region's Natural-Gas Industry Profiled at Library Event

Michael A two-part presentation in Penn College's Madigan Library provided some free insight (and some historical hindsight) into the formidable natural-gas industry in the area. “Oil’s Stepchild: The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia: A History from the First Discovery to the Maturity of the Industry” was discussed by David A. Waples, a corporate communications manager for a natural-gas utility and speech communications teacher at Penn State Erie, and Larry L. Michael, executive director of workforce and economic development, shared findings from the recent Marcellus Shale Workforce Needs Assessment.

Natural-Gas Industry to Fuel Presentations at Penn College Library

The natural-gas industry in the area, from its little-known past to its economically expansive future, will be discussed by two speakers during a Sept. 29 event at Penn College’s Madigan Library. “Oil’s Stepchild: The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia: A History from the First Discovery to the Maturity of the Industry,” will kick off the discussion, which is free and open to the public from 4-5 p.m. in the library’s second-floor reading loft. The second half of the program will feature Larry L. Michael, executive director of workforce and economic development, who will share findings from the recent Marcellus Shale Workforce Needs Assessment.

Pennsylvania Companies Profit From Global Certification Program

The Plastics Manufacturing Center at Penn College –­ partnering with A. Routsis Associates Inc. and Mid-Atlantic Plastics Partners Inc. – recently conducted a pilot training program to certify employees in Pennsylvania’s plastics industry. In the internationally recognized Global Standards for Plastics Certification training, which featured 342 employees from 16 companies, significant gains were demonstrated in production efficiency and safety, along with a reduction in scrap rates, employee turnover and customer complaints.

Penn College Students Get Eyeful of Some Very Heavy Equipment

A Heavy Construction Equipment Operations class from Penn College recently toured the Chief Oil & Gas gas-drilling location in western Lycoming County, seeing a first-of-its-kind electric rig designed specifically for the Marcellus Shale play. The students were engaged in a discussion on a variety of topics related to Chief’s Marcellus program; company representatives talked specifically about site preparation and other aspects of their operations that apply directly to the college’s heavy construction equipment technology: operator emphasis major.

Medical (Office) Assistant Class to Begin at North Campus

For those interested in beginning a career in the exciting field of health care, the next medical assistant class at Penn College’s North Campus near Wellsboro will begin in October. The daytime program – designed specifically for the North Campus by Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College – consists of 800 hours of classroom instruction and 160 hours in a medical-office setting. The class begins on Oct. 5 and ends on June 25.

North Campus Practical Nursing Program Receives Accreditation

The practical nursing program at Penn College’s North Campus has been approved for initial accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Accreditation provides recognition that a program has been evaluated by a qualified, independent group of competent peers who have found it to meet appropriate higher-education criteria in a satisfactory manner.
