Prospective 'Roustabouts' Trained at College's Heavy-Equipment Site

WNEP's Jim Hamill visited Penn College's riverside Heavy Equipment Training Site in Brady Township on Monday morning. compiling a report about heavy equipment training for potential "roustabouts" in the natural gas industry. A class of 15 Tioga County residents, in the last week of a three-week session, are getting operation and safety instruction through the Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center to better prepare them for entry-level positions with natural gas interests in the area. Hamill, whose report aired Monday evening, interviewed several of the students, as well as Jeffrey F. Lorson, industrial technology specialist with Workforce Development & Continuing Education at the college.
College Offers Course in Local Anesthetics to Dental Hygienists

The School of Health Sciences and Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College are offering a noncredit course designed to provide licensed dental hygienists with the required knowledge and skills to administer local anesthesia in clinical settings. In the 30-hour course, Local Anesthetics for the Dental Hygienist, participants will gain knowledge in orofacial anatomy, pathology, pharmacology, armamentarium and local-anesthesia administration.
DCED Secretary Tours Weatherization Training Center at Penn College

George Cornelius, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, toured the Weatherization Training Center at Penn College on Friday. The center has expanded operations in response to the growing demand for service fueled by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The center expects to train up to 1,000 men and women to help low-income households reduce energy consumption and costs in the coming year. The funding boost is expected to provide 940 jobs in Pennsylvania over the next three years for individuals who will weatherize at least 29,700 more housing units, reducing energy usage in the state by the equivalent of 155,000 barrels of oil a year. WTC provides competency-based training courses on site and on location for employees or contractors of community-based organizations who administer mechanical and building-shell retrofits under the assistance program. North Campus Practical Nursing Program Honors Graduates

Twenty-five students graduated recently from the Practical Nursing Program at Penn College's North Campus near Wellsboro. The distinguished speakers for the Dec. 17 ceremony, chosen by students, were Olivia Mays, a registered nurse/staff nurse at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, and Helene Nawrocki, executive director of the Potter County Education Council.
Penn College Partners With ClickSafety to Offer Online Training

Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College has joined forces with ClickSafety Inc. to offer noncredit safety classes online. The offerings from the college and the Alamo, Calif.-based firm enable businesses to provide safety training for their employees regardless of their location or the number of workers who are participating. More than 250 courses are offered in a dozen categories such as Awareness Courses, Safety and Health Fundamentals, Management Courses, Certificate and OSHA Outreach Courses, Mold in Construction Series, Department of Transportation Courses and General Industry Courses.
College Receives Funding for Natural Gas Industry Training From Anadarko Petroleum Corporation

Penn College has received a contribution of $15,000 from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation to support training initiatives for workers in the natural gas industry. The college, through its Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center, will use the funding from the natural gas producer to develop and implement noncredit training courses specifically designed to support Marcellus Shale development. "This investment clearly shows the commitment that Anadarko has in developing a local workforce to support the Marcellus Shale development,” said Penn College President Davie J. Gilmour. “We have been working very closely with the natural gas industry for the past year to identify its training needs and to develop courses to specifically address those needs.”
North Campus to Offer Classes for Medical Billing Specialist

Penn College’s North Campus near Wellsboro is offering classes for a medical billing and coding specialist certificate. The part-time certificate curriculum is approved by the National Healthcareer Association, which certifies the competency of newly trained professionals in allied health. Classes will be offered from 4-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 12-May 20, in Room 117 at the North Campus. Topics include medical terminology, medical insurances and third-party reimbursements, filing claims, completing common insurance forms, delinquent and denied claims, and billing procedures.
North Campus to Offer Marcellus Shale-Related Training, Resources

Penn College, through its Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center, will offer training at its North Campus near Wellsboro starting in January. The first offering will be an intensive 160-hour pre-employment program that will provide the safety and technical skills necessary for an entry-level position as a roustabout. In addition, a 180-hour commercial-driver training course will be offered in February. Forthcoming classes specific to the oil-and-gas industry will include Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety training, programmable logic controllers, roughneck training, and well-operator training.
Weatherization Training Center Expands to Meet Demand

For nearly 25 years, the Weatherization Training Center at Penn College has provided technical education and training to the professionals who implement programs helping low-income households reduce their energy consumption and costs. With an infusion of federal stimulus funds bolstering those efforts in Pennsylvania, the WTC is one of the first such training facilities nationwide to expand its operations in response to the growing demand fueled by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act support. The center held a Grand Opening on Wednesday, showcasing the enhanced facility for invited federal, state and local officials and training partners, who met with staff and toured the 16,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art instructional space on Reach Road in Williamsport. The Open House was featured in WNEP-TV and WBRE-TV newscasts Wednesday evening.
SPE, College Host Conference on Campus

Sixty-five people, representing 30 plastics companies, made a visit to Penn College’s campus Oct. 22 for an Extrusion Minitec (a mini technical conference). The program was a joint effort of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the college. Penn College students from plastics and polymer technology majors also attended as their schedules allowed, as did faculty from the majors and Plastics Manufacturing Center staff. The event featured eight technical speakers, four laboratory demonstrations, and ended with a reception.
