A 1965 Ford Mustang convertible restored by Penn College collision repair students – with a little help from their friends – recently won the highest honor possible in its inaugural adjudication: a first-place junior award at the prestigious Antique Automobile Club of America Eastern Regional Meet in Hershey. The car and its top-prize trophy, the first ever won by a college on the East Coast (and only the second nationwide), will be on display in the Madigan Library during the college's Oct. 23 Open House. "It's a big deal for a school to come in and place first in such a popular category and against some of the top restorers in the country," said Colin W. Williamson, dean of the School of Transportation Technology. "For us to go in there and pull out a trophy at a show that is considered the culmination of the entire judging season is just amazing."

Three Sikorsky helicopters have arrived at Penn College's Lumley Aviation Center, where the aircraft will provide students with years of hands-on training opportunities. The aircraft will be used in the aviation maintenance technology bachelor-degree major and in the associate-degree aviation technology major; students in both take a Rotary Wing Systems and Maintenance course. There will be applications in many other classes – dealing with aircraft structures, airframe electrical systems, reciprocating engines, for instance – and all aviation students will work on the helicopters at some point while enrolled at Penn College. Seniors in the bachelor-degree major also may select specific repairs as part of their capstone projects, said Colin W. Williamson, dean of transportation technology.

The dean of Penn College’s School of Transportation Technology is among the higher-education professionals recently certified by the Society for College and University Planning. Colin W. Williamson joins about 100 colleagues nationwide – and is one of very few in Pennsylvania – who have completed the three-level SCUP Planning Institute. The institute provides lectures, group exercises and case studies to expose its participants to best practices in higher-education planning and to build knowledge of various academic, financial and facilities-related issues across their respective campuses.

From Friday through Sunday, Penn College student drivers, mechanics and welders descended upon Williamsport's Brandon Park to participate in the 11th annual Susquehanna 500, a charity go-kart race sponsored by the Northcentral Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross. "The Susquehanna 500 was a great experience for all above who participated and provided support," said Steven Wallace, assistant dean of transportation technology. "The entire team should be congratulated for its accomplishments this weekend and admired for its willingness to give its service to a very important charity civic event."
