Penn College Teams Take First, Third in Radiography Contest

First-place winners Two teams from Penn College placed in the top three recently during a competition against students from seven other hospital and college radiography education programs. Fifteen students volunteered to represent the college's Radiography Program’s Class of 2012 in a “Technibowl” – a quiz competition – held at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and hosted by the Penn State Hershey Radiography Club. The event showcased the students’ curricular knowledge in radiation protection, physics, anatomy and physiology, radiographic exposure and positioning, and clinical and digital imaging. First-place winners were Dennis L. Fetters Jr., of Bellefonte, and Jason A. McWilliams, of Lock Haven. Third-place winners were Blair M. Cillo, of Williamsport and Sierra L. Petro, of Pottstown.

Students studying radiography at Penn College, along with the radiography program faculty and staff and the college’s new Medical Imaging Club, will celebrate National Radiologic Technology Week Nov. 6-12. Students developed educational posters for display during the week at three of the radiography program’s hospital affiliates: Evangelical Community Hospital, Mount Nittany Medical Center and Susquehanna Health.

Radiography Director Offers Input for Upcoming Textbook

Robert Slothus Penn College’s director of radiography recently served as a reviewer for a radiographic technology textbook. Robert Slothus completed a review of “Principles of Radiographic Imaging: An Art and a Science, Fifth Edition.” He offered insight on the book’s content and format. The book, written by Richard R. Carlton and Arlene M. Adler, is scheduled to be published in August by Delmar Cengage Learning.

Students Show Off Program Pride During Radiologic Technology Week

College, Susquehanna Health Extend Clinical Affiliation Agreement

Penn College and Susquehanna Health recently entered a three-year clinical affiliation agreement. The agreement provides for use of the health system’s radiology departments for clinical instruction for students enrolled in the college’s associate-degree radiography major. As part of the agreement, Susquehanna Health provides $22,000 for the 2010-11 academic year (and $22,000 for 2011-12 and $23,000 for 2012-13, totaling $67,000 over the three-year agreement), to support clinical supervision of approximately 20 radiography students who complete their 24-month clinical experience rotations at the three Susquehanna Health hospitals: Divine Providence Hospital, Muncy Valley Hospital and The Williamsport Hospital.

Fraternity President Sponsored to Attend Leadership Conference

The president of Penn College’s Phi Mu Delta fraternity has received a scholarship to attend the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute in Bloomington, Ind., this summer. Bryan G. Stetts, of Muncy, a pre-applied health studies: radiography major, was awarded the scholarship from the national headquarters of Phi Mu Delta and is among 12 undergraduates selected to be sent from the organization’s pool of members.

School of Health Sciences Holds In-Service for Preceptors

Radiography Faculty Member Reviews Textbook

Regis C. Kohler Regis C. Kohler, associate professor of radiography at Penn College, was recently asked to review a radiography textbook. Kohler reviewed “Textbook of Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy, 7th Edition,” written by Kenneth L. Bontrager and John Lampignano and published by Mosby. The publisher asked for his input on the book’s accuracy, content layout, online access, workbooks, diagrams and radiographs.

Radiography Students' Artwork Marks X-Rays' Anniversary

Susquehanna Health Evangelical Community Hospital Mount Nittany Medical CenterIn recognition of Radiologic Technology Week, the radiography students used their creative talents to make display boards for each of the hospitals affiliated with Penn College’s Radiography Program. X-radiation was discovered on Nov. 8, 1895, by Wilhelm Roentgen; the technology celebrated its 114th anniversary during the week of Nov. 8-14. The professionals in this field used to be referred to as X-ray technicians, but, as time has passed and many new modalities and technological advances have increased, they are now known as radiographers or imaging technologists.  Some of the professions under the title of “medical imaging” include diagnostic imaging, interventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), mammography, sonography (ultrasound), nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
