Library Forum Puts Focus on Fitness

The role of personal responsibility in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding the risk factors that can spell an early demise was outlined by Judy Quinti, an assistant professor of fitness and lifetime sports at Penn College, in a Thursday forum in Madigan Library's second-floor reading loft. The speaker, joined by Lynne Maietta, of Blue Health Solutions, was the latest in the college library's informative series of free, public forums held on a variety of topics.

Library Forum to Assess Personal Responsibility in Health, Fitness

The role of personal responsibility in maintaining a healthy lifestyle will be addressed by an assistant professor of fitness and lifetime sports in an upcoming forum at Penn College’s Madigan Library. Judy Quinti, a faculty member in the college’s School of Health Sciences, will present “Health Care and Fitness: Taking Responsibility for Your Health and Wellness Through Fitness” from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the library’s second-floor reading loft. The program, part of the Madigan Library Forum series, is free and open to the public.
Faculty Member Offers Professional, Inspirational Talks

Paul “Babe” Mayer, associate professor of fitness and lifetime sports, offered several talks in June. He was an invited speaker at the student body awards assembly at Loyalsock Township High School and, on June 12 and 13, was a presenter at the Pennsylvania State Strength & Conditioning Clinic at Juniata College.
Faculty Member Speaks at Professional Conference

Judy Quinti, assistant professor of fitness and lifetime sports at Penn College, was an invited speaker at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Personal Trainers Conference. The topic of Quinti’s presentation was “Personal Training Your Baby Boomer Client.” The baby boomer generation stands at 78 million strong and represents 37 percent of health-club memberships.
Coach Presents Lecture for Fitness Majors

Doug Sellmann, head strength and conditioning coach for Hunterdon Central Regional High School, presented a lecture to physical fitness specialist students on Aug. 22. Sellmann discussed the many career choices a fitness major is offered after the associate degree. He emphasized education as the No. 1 criteria needed to succeed in the field of fitness, sports management, or strength and conditioning.
YMCA Offers Opportunity to Physical Fitness Specialist Majors

Penn College students enrolled in the physical fitness specialist major were given the opportunity to experience aquatic-exercise classes, thanks to the Williamsport YMCA. The physical fitness specialist major recently revised its curriculum, and the 25 second-semester students who traveled to the YMCA on April 7 are the first to take a required course called group fitness leader training, which helps prepare them to become instructors in a variety of group-exercise formats, including aerobics, muscle conditioning and stretching.
Penn College’s Physical Fitness Specialist Majors Earn Recognition

Penn College’s fitness and lifetime sports program recently earned recognition by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Acceptance into the NSCA’s Education Recognition Program means the college’s educational programs – a bachelor’s degree in applied health studies: physical fitness specialist concentration and an associate degree in physical fitness specialist – have met and continue to meet educational guidelines recommended by the NSCA.
Students Sit for Certification Exam on Campus

Nine fourth-semester students in the physical fitness specialist major recently sat for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Certified Personal Trainer exam, which was conducted on campus in April. Designed for professionals who work one-on-one with their clients in a variety of environments, it is one of the top certifications to achieve in the field of fitness management and personal training. The exam thoroughly tests the knowledge and skills that are necessary to successfully train active and sedentary physically healthy individuals, as well as the elderly and obese.
Fitness Elective Credit Available for Eligible Veterans

Penn College students who have been in the military may now receive a fitness elective credit for their basic training, provided the training has taken place within the past 10 years. Students with military service would need to submit a transcript to the Admissions Office from the American Council on Education stating that the training has been evaluated. If additional credit for military experience is requested, the request will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Such requests should be directed to the department head for fitness and lifetime sports or the dean of the School of Health Sciences.
Physical Fitness Specialist Majors Completing Fitness Center Internship

Anton Ferrer, Cara Jackson and Mike Lombardi are completing their Physical Fitness Specialist internship requirement at the Penn College Fitness Center this semester. Each student will be available to work individually, and free of charge, with Fitness Center members interested in personal fitness testing and training.
