Penn College, Salvation Army Again Allies in Tax-Help Program

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Penn College students and community volunteers from The Salvation Army annually help hundreds of low-income local residents prepare their returns, soon will resume for the 2008 tax season. The Internal Revenue Service’s free program will be offered in Room 102 of the college's Madigan Library from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday from Feb. 2 through April 9. Tax assistance also will be available at The Salvation Army’s 457 Market St. location in downtown Williamsport and at the Muncy Public Library, 108 S. Main St. "We are anticipating a busy tax season as we work together with Penn College to provide low-income taxpayers with this free service so that they may receive all the tax credits and their full refund!” said Major Marie Harris, who, along with Pam Hicks, oversees The Salvation Army’s role in the partnership. “This year, we have expanded our sites to reach out even further in our county."
Students to Provide Taxpayer Assistance at North Campus

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Penn College students prepare income-tax returns at no cost, will offer three Fridays of by-appointment-only help to Northern Tier residents this season. The program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20, March 20 and April 3 at the college's North Campus, along Route 6 between Wellsboro and Mansfield.
Statewide Paralegal Summit to Be Held on Penn College Campus

Two alumni of Penn College's American Bar Association-approved legal assistant/paralegal studies major are at the forefront of a statewide roundtable to be held Sept. 13 on the college's main campus in Williamsport. Among the organizers of "The 2008 Pennsylvania Summit on the Paralegal Profession," to be held in the Thompson Professional Development Center, are Rebecca J. Buttorff, who received her associate degree in 1996 and is a practicing paralegal with a Williamsport law firm, and George R. Roles, who graduated from the baccalaureate program in 2004 and now attends law school.
Free Income-Tax Assistance Program Returns to Penn College

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which a dozen Penn College students helped hundreds of local residents prepare returns last year, soon will resume at the college’s Madigan Library. The free program will be offered from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday from Feb. 4 until April 10. Taxpayer services are not available when the college is closed or when students are on Spring Break (March 17-24). The site – Room 102 on the library’s first floor – is for walk-ins only; appointments are not accepted.
Legal Assistant Major Distinguishes Herself With National Honor

A sophomore in Penn College’s legal assistant/paralegal studies bachelor-degree major has been chosen as a 2007 American FFA Degree recipient representing Pennsylvania. Jessica M. Kessler, of Beavertown, received the prestigious award from the National FFA Organization, which – originally called the Future Farmers of America – has broadened its membership to individuals outside the agricultural vocation.

Turri, compliance officer for Susquehanna Health (in left photo), who discussed protection of medical records under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act; and Karen Orwan, security officer for Omega Bank, and Brenda Bittner, Omega's branch development and education coordinator, who addressed ways to combat identify theft.
Bar Association Reapproves College’s Legal Assistant Majors

The American Bar Association has granted reapproval to Penn College’s legal assistant majors, one of only 14 programs in Pennsylvania to be recognized in that fashion. “This notification reaffirms the high quality of the instruction, advising, work-based experiences and job placement provided by our paralegal studies faculty and college for our certificate and associate- and bachelor-degree-seeking students,” said Edward A. Henninger, dean of business and computer technologies.

Student Has Article Published in Boston College Law Review

An article by a legal assistant/paralegal student at Penn College has been published in the Boston College Law School's Intellectual Property and Technology Forum, a rarity for an undergraduate.
Michael J. Goldstein, a former Marlton, N.J., resident now living in Williamsport, wrote "Google's Literary Quest in Peril," a well-received meshing of a lifelong interest in art/literature with his law-school career goal. The article
examines Google's online posting of published works and the ensuing claim by the Authors Guild that the enterprise violates copyright protections.
Faculty Members Present Legal-Education Seminar on Identity Theft

Four Penn College faculty members recently presented a continuing legal-education seminar on "Identity Theft" to members of the Lycoming Law Association. Rhonda L. Davis, assistant professor, legal assistant; and Kevin R. Derr and Walter J. Landen, professors, legal assistant; spoke on legal issues related to this majorcriminal and economic problem. Eric K. Albert, associate professor, machine tool technologies/automated manufacturing, discussed the impact of technology on identity theft.
