Students Share Taste of Autumn at Growers Market

Students from Penn College's School of Hospitality celebrated the Williamsport Growers Market "Customer Appreciation Day" in typical hands-on fashion Saturday, carving pumpkins in a pre-Halloween competition and plating a variety of treats for hungry patrons at the downtown venue.
Winemaker Meets Students, Speaks at Hospitality Benefit

Gary Eberle, founder of Eberle Winery and known as the “Godfather” of Paso Robles, Calif., winemaking, spoke with students in the School of Hospitality on Wednesday afternoon about winemaking and the food and wine industry. The talk preceded an evening “California Food and Wine Pairing” event, which featured Eberle wines and a gourmet “California Fusion” menu produced by students in the School of Hospitality’s Regional American Cuisine and Contemporary Desserts classes. During the benefit, Eberle described each wine’s characteristics as diners compared each course’s wine and food pairings.
Students to Serve Samples, Carve Pumpkins at Growers Market

Students from Penn College will offer a pumpkin-carving demonstration – competition-style – and serve food samples made with fresh, local ingredients during “Customer Appreciation Day” at the Williamsport Outdoor Growers Market on Oct. 22. Students enrolled in the college’s Catering course will offer cooking demonstrations and samples beginning at 8 a.m. Student managers for the event are Cassandra R. Brochu, of South Williamsport; Arthur H. Byra, of East Stroudsburg; and Jordan T. Homet, of Granville Summit.
Visiting Chef Series to Feature Cuisine of Southern Italy

Southern Italy native Sabrina LaRosa will lend her expertise to students during the next installment of the Visiting Chef Series at Penn College. During her visit, she will instruct School of Hospitality students in rustic Italian cooking techniques, culminating with an elegant five-course Visiting Chef Dinner, produced and served by the students under LaRosa’s direction, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. LaRosa’s Nov. 2 public cooking demonstration is sold out.
Students Learn About America’s Culinary Influences

Regional American Cuisine menus, prepared by students in the School of Hospitality at Penn College, have returned for the fall semester at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. Served Wednesday and Friday evenings this semester, the dinners feature signature dishes from across the continent, prepared by students in a course taught by Chef Michael J. Ditchfield, instructor of hospitality management/culinary arts.
Ice Sculptures Provide 'Cool' Addition to Children's Day

Some of the Children’s Learning Center gang, enjoying the beautiful fall weather in the Hager Lifelong Education Center courtyard on Friday, came upon a wonderful surprise. Chef Frank M. Suchwala, assistant professor of culinary arts/hospitality management, and his School of Hospitality students were out there, too, learning how to make ice sculptures! They kindly turned off their chain saws so that the children could come close enough to touch the sculptures. The consensus? They were cold!

Students to Help Prepare 'Mister Rogers' Benefit Dinner

Six students from Penn College's School of Hospitality will assist regionally and nationally acclaimed chefs in preparing the “Ewe Are Special” dinner, to benefit the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media, at the Jamison Farm on Sept. 24. The farm, in Latrobe, provides free-range lamb to the finest restaurants in the country – including the college’s Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. Students Arthur H. Byra, of East Stroudsburg; Katelyn R. Ciavardini, of Sayre; Marlee M. Horchen, of Johnsonburg; Lizabeth A. Mertz, of Northumberland; Kevin W. Pysher, of East Stroudsburg; and Clayton P. Tressler, of Jonestown, will serve in a support role to the chefs during the dinner.
Le Jeune Chef Receives 'Wine Spectator' Honor

For the 12th consecutive year, Wine Spectator magazine has granted its "Best of Award of Excellence" to Penn College's Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. The restaurant is one of 833 worldwide to earn the magazine’s second-tier “Best of” award. Only 74 restaurants received the top-tier “Grand Award,” and 2,827 restaurants received the magazine’s “Award of Excellence.” The award winners are listed in the magazine’s annual Dining Guide, published in the Aug. 31 issue. A total of 96 Pennsylvania restaurants are recognized on the list, and Le Jeune Chef Restaurant is among only 15 “Best of” recipients in the state.
School of Hospitality to Host Wine Expert, Pairing Event

In a learning opportunity for Penn College students and a benefit for scholarship funds, the college will host a “California Food and Wine Pairing” event, featuring a gourmet “California fusion” menu created by students in the School of Hospitality, paired with selections from the Eberle Winery in Paso Robles, Calif. Gary Eberle, the winery’s founder, will be on hand for the Oct. 12 event, describing each wine’s characteristics as diners compare each course’s wine and food pairings. During his visit to campus, he will lecture in wine-and-beverage management and hospitality management classes.
Hospitality Majors Attain Reaccreditation

The three associate-degree majors offered by the School of Hospitality at Penn College have been granted reaccreditation through 2016. The college's baking and pastry arts and culinary arts technology majors were given renewed accreditation by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission; the hospitality management major earned reaccreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration.
