College Faculty Member Works With Middle Schoolers on Fundraiser
Feb. 6, 2012 - 12:58 p.m.
A Penn College faculty member’s volunteer time presenting “Brown Bag Lunch” sessions at Curtin Middle School resulted in both a hands-on manufacturing experience and a $185 fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. John M. Good III, instructor of automation and computer-integrated manufacturing, presented eight sessions for the sixth- to eighth-grade students, offering them insight into the world of manufacturing engineering with such topics as robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics and computer-aided design, and nanotechnology. With the students’ interest, Good developed a product for them to manufacture – a sled ornament made from five popsicle sticks and three toothpicks. Sleds were sold for a $1 donation at a winter choral concert, benefiting the Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

Outreach Event Links Careers to College's 'degrees that work'
March 29, 2011 - 4:07 p.m.
Several Penn College departments visited the STEM Fair at Park Forest Middle School in State College on March 16. The fair provides an opportunity for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students to engage in activities and presentations that convey that science, technology, engineering and math are viable and real career paths they can take. The fair is part of a sustained effort to increase awareness and availability of those careers. College employees who attended the event included Dave Probst, assistant professor of drafting and computer aided design, Tim Weston, associate professor of plastics technology, Brad Martin, instructor of building construction management, and Barbara Benner, coordinator of nontraditional careers retention for Career Services. The faculty and staff members were able to connect their fields of study to the students in attendance, plus provide opportunities for the students to attend the college’s SMART Girls and NEO Guys events.

Annual recertification is a detailed process that allows the department to closely examine its curriculum, faculty background, employment placement of graduates, classroom capabilities and more, to ensure it is offering the best it can to students. "It is an important credential for our department to maintain," said Katherine A. Walker, assistant professor of drafting and computer aided design.
Students Cap Class With Catapult Designs, Testing
Jan. 25, 2010 - 2:40 p.m.
Penn College students enrolled in the computer aided product design major wrapped up their fall semester with a high-flying hands-on project. The students, all enrolled in the Design and Production Drawings course, spent the last four classes in the fall semester designing and building catapults, trebuchets and similar medieval-style throwing devices. Grouped in teams, students used their CAD skills to design the projects within a 4-foot-by-4-foot-by-4-foot footprint, create a bill of materials, calculate their devices’ expected throwing distance, assemble the machines and test the accuracy of their calculations.
