Faculty Member Offers Graduation Address at SCI Muncy

Katherine A. Walker Katherine A. Walker, assistant professor of drafting and computer aided design at Penn College, spoke at the Oct. 8 graduation ceremony at the State Correctional Institution at Muncy. Walker is a longtime member of the institution’s academic advisory committee. Her address encouraged the graduates to celebrate their achievements – made greater by the obstacles they overcame to attain them – and to use their experience to encourage others.

Association Recertifies Penn College’s CAD Technology Major

Penn College's computer aided drafting technology major recently was recertified by the American Design Drafting Association. "It is an important credential for our department to maintain," said Katherine A. Walker, assistant professor of drafting and computer aided design. "This annual activity allows us to closely examine our drafting and design program in many areas, such as curriculum, faculty background, employment placement of graduates and classroom capabilities, to name a few. Earning recertification is a very detailed process, and our department can take pride in this continued accomplishment."

In its ninth year, the college's SMART Girls program offers a variety of hands-on activities to show the real-life value of math and science in the career world.

Camp Offers Glimpse at Engineering Technology Careers

Penn College recently hosted 22 area high school students on campus during its free Discover Engineering Technology Camp. The two-day camp serves as an opportunity for students entering grades nine and 10 to learn about the variety of careers available in the engineering technology field, as well as the programs offered through the college’s School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies.

College to Host Williamsport Autodesk User Group Meeting

April 20, 2009 - 4:20 p.m.

At the Williamsport Autodesk User Group meeting on April 27, a Penn College faculty member will make a presentation on new functionality for plastics part design in AutoCAD Inventor 2010 software. Topics to be covered by J.D. Mather, assistant professor of drafting/computer aided design, are a new plastics part feature tool; core/cavity mold layout including mold-flow mold-simulation software now built into AutoCAD Inventor; and mold assembly using standard vendor content. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in Penn’s Inn at the Bush Campus Center. The meeting is open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

Faculty Member Presents Sessions at International Conference

Mather, assistant professor of drafting and computer aided design, presented “Working With Neutral Format Surface and Solid Models in Autodesk Inventor” and "Functional Design Tools for Educators in Autodesk Inventor Professional.” developed in cooperation with Penn College physics lab technician Michael J. McNaul.

Penn College Plays Prominent Role at Autodesk Conference

Penn College was well-represented at Autodesk University 2007, held Nov. 27-30 in Las Vegas. Autodesk University is the world’s largest annual gathering of computer aided design and related professionals, with more than 10,000 working professionals, industry experts and Autodesk executives in attendance. Five faculty and staff members attended the conference, one presenting several sessions, and a model of an arbor press − completed during his freshman year by student Austin M. Upright, of Montoursville − played a prominent role.

Alumnus Donates Mechanical Drawings to College Archives

A member of the Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation Board of Directors has donated to the college nearly 200 mechanical drawings completed while he was student at Williamsport Technical Institute, a Penn College forerunner. David W. Conklin, who graduated from the mechanical drafting program in 1965, said he donated the 197 drawings to the college’s archives “so that current students could see how it was done prior to CAD (computer aided drafting).”

"Earning recertification is a very detailed process, and our department can take pride in this continued accomplishment." The college has earned certification for its computer aided drafting technology associate-degree major every year since 1997.
