Penn College Announces Winners of Annual Food Show

'Best of Show' Penn College announced the winners for its annual Food Show, held in December as a showcase for final projects in advanced culinary arts and baking and pastry arts courses at the college. Taking the Chef Eugene Mattucci Best of Show Award was a chocolate house made by Alisha M. Howell, a baking and pastry arts student from Waymart. Her creation depicted an old-time theater decked out for the holidays. Mattucci was chef/owner of Mattucci’s Italian Restaurant in Mount Carmel and was a longtime Penn College advisory committee member and Food Show judge.

Dec. 2 Food Show Features Chocolate House Auction

Culinary arts and baking and pastry arts students at Penn College will show their final projects – from hors d’oeuvres and ice sculptures to plated desserts and wedding cakes, all artistically presented – during the School of Hospitality’s annual Food Show on Dec. 2. Among the highlights is a display of chocolate houses made by students in the Principles of Chocolate Works course. The houses will be sold in silent auction, funds from which will be donated to Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity. A subsequent live auction of student-created holiday treats will add funds to the donation.

Authenticity Essential Ingredient for Visiting Chef

Her visit culminated with a Visiting Chef dinner on Friday, which raised funds for annual scholarship awards.

Hospitality RA, Residents Prepare Meal in Living-Learning Community

Robinson, on Friday to prepare a meal for one another (as well as any residents from the floor who wished to attend). Hospitality students worked with Robinson, a culinary arts and systems major from Bellefonte, on learning proper preparation of ingredients, including how to make noodles from scratch. Hospitality majors and nonculinary students alike enjoyed an evening of learning and tasting.

Winemaker Meets Students, Speaks at Hospitality Benefit

Gary Eberle Gary Eberle, founder of Eberle Winery and known as the “Godfather” of Paso Robles, Calif., winemaking, spoke with students in the School of Hospitality on Wednesday afternoon about winemaking and the food and wine industry. The talk preceded an evening “California Food and Wine Pairing” event, which featured Eberle wines and a gourmet “California Fusion” menu produced by students in the School of Hospitality’s Regional American Cuisine and Contemporary Desserts classes. During the benefit, Eberle described each wine’s characteristics as diners compared each course’s wine and food pairings.

Students to Serve Samples, Carve Pumpkins at Growers Market

Students from Penn College will offer a pumpkin-carving demonstration – competition-style – and serve food samples made with fresh, local ingredients during “Customer Appreciation Day” at the Williamsport Outdoor Growers Market on Oct. 22. Students enrolled in the college’s Catering course will offer cooking demonstrations and samples beginning at 8 a.m. Student managers for the event are Cassandra R. Brochu, of South Williamsport; Arthur H. Byra, of East Stroudsburg; and Jordan T. Homet, of Granville Summit.

Visiting Chef Series to Feature Cuisine of Southern Italy

Sabrina LaRosa Southern Italy native Sabrina LaRosa will lend her expertise to students during the next installment of the Visiting Chef Series at Penn College. During her visit, she will instruct School of Hospitality students in rustic Italian cooking techniques, culminating with an elegant five-course Visiting Chef Dinner, produced and served by the students under LaRosa’s direction, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. LaRosa’s Nov. 2 public cooking demonstration is sold out.

Students Learn About America’s Culinary Influences

Sept. 19, 2011 - 3:50 p.m.

Regional American Cuisine menus, prepared by students in the School of Hospitality at Penn College, have returned for the fall semester at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. Served Wednesday and Friday evenings this semester, the dinners feature signature dishes from across the continent, prepared by students in a course taught by Chef Michael J. Ditchfield, instructor of hospitality management/culinary arts.
