Culinary Alumnus to Appear on Episode of Food Network Series

Dean Yasharian, who earned a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts technology in 2003, will appear on an episode of Food Network series “Chopped” this week. The episode, titled “When Chefs Collide,” will premiere at 10 p.m. Oct. 13 and will be rebroadcast at 1 a.m. Oct. 14 and 8 p.m. Oct. 23.

Visitors Share Expertise With Hospitality Students, Faculty

An expert shares his art School of Hospitality students and faculty benefited from visits this week by culinary experts who shared their knowledge during classes and special events. Klaus Wahl, professor of viticulture at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, and an internationally recognized expert in the field, spoke to several hospitality management classes and provided a professional development opportunity for the staff of Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. His visit culminated Wednesday evening with “A German Food and Wine Tasting,” a fund-raising event during which he shared his expertise with diners as they sampled German wine paired with elegant food courses prepared by School of Hospitality students and faculty. Also visiting this week were Genaro Gonzalez, creative services specialist for the California Raisin Marketing Board, and Dominique Homo, owner of L’Ecole du Pain (The School of Bread) in Quebec. Homo spent the morning with baking and pastry arts classes, teaching them artisanal raisin bread-making recipes. In preparation for the visit, 16 students developed their own raisin-bread recipes for a contest sponsored by the marketing board. Products were judged and winners were announced Wednesday afternoon. Culinary Major Honored During 'Senior Day' at Tennis Match

James Kyle Hanjaras and tennis coach Aimee Plastow This year's lone graduating member of the Penn College tennis team was recognized during a brief "Senior Day" ceremony prior to Wednesday afternoon's match against Penn State Mont Alto. James Kyle Hanjaras, a culinary arts and systems major from Montrose, was congratulated by teammates and members of the Athletics Department at the Memorial Park courts, where the Wildcats ultimately won, 9-0. Hanjaras was characterized by coach Aimee Plastow as "the big man with the big serve," but the coach termed the National Guardsman's military service far more noteworthy than any of his on-court accomplishments. Chef-Instructor Selected for National Raisin Bread Competition

Niedermyer A baking and pastry arts instructor at Penn College was selected to compete in the final round of the second annual America’s Best Raisin Bread Contest, sponsored by the California Raisin Marketing Board. Chef Charles R. Niedermyer, instructor of baking and pastry arts/culinary arts, will join 29 other bakers at the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan, Kan., Oct. 9-10 to prepare his raisin bread recipe in front of a panel of distinguished judges from the artisan and commercial-baking industries.

Students to Serve Tea Luncheon to Benefit American Rescue Workers

Penn College students will prepare a tea luncheon on Oct. 19 to benefit the American Rescue Workers Men’s Center in Williamsport. Under the direction of Chef Judith P. Shimp, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts, culinary arts students in the Breakfast and Brunch course will serve an English high tea buffet, with poured hot and flavored ice tea. The tea will be served in Le Jeune Chef Restaurant, which provides an education in fine dining to students in the college’s School of Hospitality, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A silent auction is scheduled during the event, with bidding to end at 1 p.m. The American Rescue Workers is accepting donation of auction items.

Students, Expert Pair for ‘A German Food and Wine Tasting’

Penn College’s School of Hospitality will host an internationally recognized wine expert on campus and, as part of his visit, will offer “A German Wine and Food Tasting” to benefit international student programs at the college. During the Oct. 7 event, Klaus Wahl, professor of viticulture at the Technical University of Munich, will share his knowledge of wine as diners experience the five tasting portions prepared by School of Hospitality students and faculty. While on campus, Wahl will also speak to students in Wine and Beverage Management and Wines of the World classes and offer professional development for Le Jeune Chef dining room staff.

Students to Help Launch ‘Local Foods Week’ at Growers Market

Penn College students will prepare free samples of dishes made with fresh, local food products at the Williamsport Growers Market on Sept. 12. Students enrolled in a Catering class offered by the college’s School of Hospitality will prepare food on-site from 8 a.m. until noon – or as long as the food lasts – as part of the regional Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter’s “Local Foods Week,” Sept. 12-18.

College Presents Teaching Awards to Three Faculty Members

Christine M. Kessler named Master Teacher Penn College honored three faculty members with Distinguished Teaching Awards at Spring Commencement ceremonies held May 16 at the Community Arts Center. The college’s highest level of recognition for a faculty member − the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award − was presented to Christine M. Kessler, assistant professor of physician assistant. Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented to Dottie M. Mathers, associate professor of medical/surgical nursing; and Frank M. Suchwala, instructor of hospitality management/culinary arts.
