Construction Students Awarded Scholarships From Industry Allies

Five Penn College students – all enrolled in the School of Construction and Design Technologies – will receive $1,250 from Centex Homes and the philanthropic arm of the National Association of Home Builders, both longtime partners in the college’s academic mission. This year’s honorees include Benjamin H. Clark, Chadds Ford, and Corwyn K. Smith, Gettysburg, residential construction technology and management: building construction technology concentration; Noah A. Grube, New Tripoli, construction management; Ryan M. Hummel, Reading, building construction technology; and Tyler V. Jones, South Abington Township, architectural technology. It is the second consecutive award to Smith, who received $3,000 last year.
CMA Once Again 'Student Chapter of the Year'

Penn College's Construction Management Association successfully defended its title of "Student Chapter of the Year" during the recent Associated Builders and Contractors’ 2009 Student Construction Management Competition in Honolulu. Five construction management students and a faculty member – Wayne R. Sheppard, assistant professor of construction management and CMA adviser – returned this week from competition, carrying the chapter's second consecutive national honor. The students are James P. Craft, of York; Nicholas J. Colaric, of Eighty Four; Dean T. Bell, of Schwenksville; Leonard C. Nicholas, of Hollywood; and Tomasz Jezowski, of Morrisville.
All-American Golfers Named Week's Student-Athletes

Eric J. Schall, a graduate of Jersey Shore Area High School, and Leonard C. Nicholas, a graduate of Abington High School, have been named Penn College's "co-Student-Athletes of the Week" for Oct. 5-12. Schall is a sophomore plastics and polymer engineering technology major and Nicholas a senior construction management major. They were instrumental in leading the college golf team to its sixth straight conference championship and, by virtue of their top five individual finishes (Schall was second and Nicholas third) they were awarded All-Penn State University Athletic Conference and All-American honors. They became the first two Penn College athletes, outside of archery, to claim All-American status. Penn College ended its season with an 18-1-1 record. Over the past six seasons, it is 166-1-1. Each Monday, coaches who are in season nominate a student-athlete from their team. Nominees then are evaluated by college athletic office personnel, who select the student-athlete of the week.
Kaitlyn M. Charmbury September's 'Student of the Month'

Kaitlyn M. Charmbury, a residential construction management: architectural technology student from State College, has been chosen as September's Student Government Association “Student of the Month” at Penn College. "Kaitlyn is an exemplary student who demonstrates strong leadership skills, as well as academic performance,” her nominator wrote. “She is a fair and balanced leader who respects others and puts herself in their shoes when examining a situation. Kaitlyn is an excellent role model for her residents and her peers.”
College Presents Mentorship Awards

Penn College has presented Mentorship Awards to two Baltimore-based companies and their representatives: Karl Quinn/Alban Tractor Co. Inc. and David A. Potts/ The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. The Mentorship Award recognizes alumni and/or businesses that have made significant or ongoing contributions to the education and development of students. The awards were presented during Saturday's Summer Commencement ceremony at the Community Arts Center.
Construction Management Students Help Move Habitat to New Home

Continuing a mutually beneficial partnership that has crossed a number of years and academic majors at Penn College, members of the Construction Management Association and their adviser recently helped the local Habitat for Humanity chapter move into its own new Williamsport home. On a snowy Friday morning, more than a dozen students – accompanied by Wayne R. Sheppard, assistant professor of construction management in the college’s School of Construction and Design Technologies – moved Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity from the Hepburn Plaza shopping center to its new headquarters in the former R&J Ertel Inc. offices at 540 Lycoming St.
Penn College Students Build Playhouse to Benefit ‘Habitat’

Ryan P. Becker Chosen as 'Student of the Month'

Ryan P. Becker, a construction management major from Johnstown, has been chosen as the Student Government Association’s “Student of the Month” for November. “Ryan is the model student and young leader,” his faculty nominator said. “He constantly performs tasks above outstanding levels, is always willing to counsel or tutor younger students, represents the program and college well on- and off-campus, and is committed to excellence."
Construction, Engineering Technology Majors Represented at Maryland Event

Recently Steven K. McCoy, coordinator of matriculation and retention for Penn College's School of Construction and Design Technologies, and Stacey C. Hampton, coordinator of matriculation and retention for the School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies, participated in the Frederick ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) College Fair held at the Bechtel Corp. in Frederick, Md.
Construction Management Scholarship Reaches Endowed Status

Construction management students at Penn College have a new scholarship fund to turn to for financial assistance. The college’s construction management faculty began raising funds for the School of Construction and Design Technologies Construction Management (BCM) Scholarship just three years ago, and faculty member Wayne R. Sheppard reports the fund recently reached endowed status with a balance of more than $20,000.
