College's 'Mini Baja' team soars A team of Penn College students recently returned from a collegiate engineering challenge – the Baja SAE – with a strong finish among some of the top engineering universities in North and South America and a “Best Prepared Award” from the contest judges. Eight students – members of the college’s Society of Manufacturing Engineers student chapter – spent months preparing a Baja off-road vehicle for competition at the Society of Automotive Engineers’ Baja Carolina event, held April 8-11 at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research campus in Greenville, S.C. Among 100 colleges and universities from four countries, the team finished 20th overall, with an impressive 12th-place finish in the Suspension and Traction challenge and a 14th place in the Endurance Race, which concluded the three-day series of grueling events.

Guest Speaker to Discuss Concrete's 'Green' Qualities

March 30, 2010 - 7:24 a.m.

Philip W. Kresge "Concrete’s Role in Sustainable Development," detailing how concrete plays an integral part in green building design and construction, will be presented at 3:30 p.m. April 6 in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium. The guest speaker for the event, which is organized by Drew R. Potts, instructor of civil engineering technology at Penn College, will be Philip W. Kresge , senior director of natural resources for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Participants will understand how ready-mixed concrete can be used to minimize environmental impact of construction, and how architects, engineers, contractors and ready-mixed concrete producers can work together to optimize environmental performance. The focus of the program is on the environmental benefits of concrete, including the use of recycled materials, heat-island mitigation, reduction of energy consumption and stormwater management. Featured products will include concrete pavements, wall systems, green roofs, flowable fill and pervious concrete. The program also covers an overview of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design 2009 Green Building Rating System, and how ready-mixed concrete contributes to earning LEED certification. The session is open to all, with a particular emphasis on majors in the schools of Industrial and Engineering Technologies and Construction and Design Technologies.

Nov. 18, 2008 - 9:52 a.m.

Crosscurricular cooperation at heavy-equipment training site ESC students demonstrate equipment for civil engineering majors Heavy construction equipment: operator emphasis majors from Budd L. Greevy’s Heavy Equipment Operations class recently put on a demonstration for civil engineering technology students in Robert P. Gresko’s site-preparation course. (Greevy, who provided the photos, is an instructor of diesel equipment technology in Penn College's School of Natural Resources Management; Gresko is an instructor of construction technology in the School of Construction and Design Technologies.) The operations students – members of the Service and Operation of Heavy Equipment Association – explained the different genres of heavy construction equipment and the tasks they perform on a job site, as well as some application and efficiency factors for each type of machine. They also did demonstrations to explain why some trends have changed in recent years.
