A new scholarship fund at Penn College honoring a Linden-area man and his wife will support students in the college’s business administration bachelor-degree majors. The Henry and Donna Stutz Scholarship Fund was established by The Hartman Group, a company consisting of The Hartman Agency Inc., Hartman Employee Benefits Inc. and Hartman Financial Services, operating out of offices in Williamsport, State College and Duncannon. The scholarship honors the former president of The Hartman Group and his wife. “Hank Stutz is very committed to a technical, knowledge-based approach to property and casualty insurance and to the development of knowledge within the insurance industry,” said Michael P. Gaetano, president of The Hartman Agency Inc. “His devotion to education in the industry is now further extended to a college scholarship fund to recognize him and his wife, Donna, in support of students at Penn College.”

The Information Technology Living-Learning Community had the opportunity to learn about optical fiber terminations in a recent session hosted by Jeff B. Weaver, associate professor of electronics and computer engineering technology. Students donned safety glasses and, armed with strippers and cleavers, prepared a duplex multimode fiber optic cable for termination with an MT-RJ workstation jack, Weaver explained. A Visual Fault Locator, a tool that sends light down the fiber, was used to test the termination. The program provided students with an introduction to fiber optic transmission and the techniques used to install connectors on such lines. The Residence Life Office offers a number of living-learning communities on campus, bringing outside-the-classroom opportunities to students enrolled in the same academic majors.

A class project supported by alumni donations has resulted in a new scholarship fund at Penn College. In 2009, $1,500 from the pool of donations designated by alumni to support the School of Business and Computer Technologies was set aside as seed money for an annual project in the Principles of Management course. Those projects since have earned profits of $4,880, money that was used recently to establish the Small Business/Entrepreneurship Scholarship Fund. The fund also received $1,000 through the Penn College chapter of Students in Free Enterprise, which donated $500; the organization’s adviser, Dennis R. Williams, associate professor of business administration/management, made a matching gift.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance campaign, in which Penn College students partner with The Salvation Army and Internal Revenue Service, is helping hundreds of eligible area residents prepare and file their returns this season. Free assistance to low- and moderate-income taxpayers will be offered in Room 102 of the college's Madigan Library from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday to Thursday, through April 7. The service also is available at The Salvation Army’s 457 Market St. site in downtown Williamsport; at the Muncy Public Library, 108 S. Main St.; and at the Lock Haven Salvation Army, 114 N. Grove St. All of the locations are overseen by Kylie N. Waslosky, a Penn College accounting student from Houtzdale, who is serving an internship as the collaboration’s administrative coordinator.

Asesh K. Das, professor of computer science, and Bradley M. Webb, coordinator of matriculation and retention for business and computer technologies, visited Oct. 29 and provided information on biometrics: methods used to recognize humans based on physical or behavioral traits (fingerprints, gait, etc.). On Nov. 8, Phillip D. Landers, professor of business administration/management, provided a lesson on "growing" money – including investing, credit cards, interest and developing financial goals. Curtin's brown-bag program allows students to attend voluntary mini-courses held over the lunch period. In addition to the School of Business and Computer Technologies, representatives from the college's School of Health Sciences and Industrial and Engineering Technologies have presented workshops.
