'Green' Construction Majors Showcased in Capitol Rotunda
Feb. 11, 2011 - 10:57 a.m.
Penn College was among 26 exhibitors at the Career and Technical Education celebration Feb. 8-9 in the East Wing Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Harrisburg. The college’s renewable energy technologies and building science and sustainable design majors were among the key programs highlighted during Tuesday's opening ceremonies. Students, teachers and the public were welcome to visit the invited schools’ displays; the Penn College table featured a PowerPoint slide show of the newest “green building technology” majors offered by the School of Construction and Design Technologies. Visitors also had the opportunity to view the online Sunny Portal, which illustrates the college's cost and energy savings realized from an array of solar panels that students installed to serve the Victorian House. Geoffrey M. Campbell (assistant professor of architectural technology) and Wayne E. Gebhart (assistant professor of electrical technologies/occupations) deftly fielded questions from guests, while Jason T. Maddox, of South Williamsport (a building science and sustainable design major/president of the newly organized student chapter of the United States Green Building Council), was available to offer a student’s perspective of both programs. State Sen. Gene Yaw and state Rep. Rick Mirabito were among those who visited the college's display.

Students Bring 'Green' Sensibility to Parade Route
Aug. 22, 2010 - 4:03 p.m.
Students in Geoffrey M. Campbell's 300-level Passive Design studio class were asked to fashion a parade costume that would be representative of Penn College's building science and sustainable design major. They were given the assignment last Monday and the costumes were due Wednesday. According to Campbell, an assistant professor of architectural technology (who also provided the photos), the idea was that the designer of the best costume would get to ride the Penn College float in Thursday's Grand Slam Parade to kick off the Little League Baseball World Series. The students voted for their favorite three designs. David Dontigny's was the top vote-getter, but he was unable to participate in the parade. Instead, Erica Schreffler (who took second place) wore Dontigny's costume and was joined on the float by Ashley Beatty, who also was among the top vote-getters.
New Two-Year Degree at Penn College Focuses on Renewable Energy
Feb. 4, 2010 - 5:15 p.m.
A new Penn College associate degree, the latest industry-aware major at an institution that grows “greener” by the day, will prepare students for careers in the renewable energy field. Beginning with the Fall 2010 semester, the college’s School of Construction and Design Technologies will offer a two-year degree in renewable energy technologies. In a sequence of theory and laboratory courses over the four-semester curriculum, students can develop the practical skills to install, troubleshoot and maintain photovoltaic, wind-turbine and solar-thermal systems. “Renewable energy will be a hot topic for years to come due to depletion of our natural resources and reliance on fossil fuels,” said Marc E. Bridgens, dean of construction and design technologies at Penn College. “With all the national and local emphasis on our ‘carbon footprint,’ it’s only natural that we get involved in teaching these up-to-date technologies.”
