Campus Roundtable Discussion to Focus on Accounting Profession

Current job opportunities and issues in the accounting field will be among the topics addressed in a discussion sponsored by Penn College's Accounting Society and faculty from the college’s School of Business and Computer Technologies. The roundtable will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room E205 of the Breuder Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center on the college’s main campus in Williamsport. While geared toward accounting majors and interested students and faculty, the free event is open to the public.
Accounting Graduate Included on Roster of Exemplary Seniors

A graduate of Penn College's four-year accounting major has been included among the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants' "Outstanding Seniors" for the year. Gina M. Indelicarto, of Jersey Shore, was honored in May with the PICPA Award, presented by the college's School of Business and Computer Technologies for excellence in accounting studies under criteria established by the institute. The cum-laude graduate is listed among this year's award-winners at PICPA's " CPAZone ," a Web site exclusively dedicated to Pennsylvania students and educators interested in the accounting profession.
IRS Honors Penn College for Taxpayer Assistance

Penn College has been honored by the Internal Revenue Service for its participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which uses agency-certified business students to provide free tax help to qualified area residents. The college again collaborated this past tax season with the Salvation Army, where a brief ceremony was held Monday in recognition of that longtime involvement. Phillip D. Landers, VITA site administrator and professor of business administration/accounting at Penn College, was presented with a "Best Supporting Partner" statue – similar in size, appearance and heft to an Academy Award – by the Pennsylvania/Delaware territory of the IRS' Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication division. "You and Penn College went over the top; you really just kept doing and doing," said Pat Healy, senior stakeholder relationship tax consultant. "We have so many hopes for this Lycoming County coalition, and we know that your heart and soul is in this." Among those hopes is an initiative to better aid taxpayers in Pennsylvania's rural areas, primarily senior citizens and Earned Income Tax Credit qualifiers. Penn College Student Tax Preparers More Than Double Refunds

Penn College students helped hundreds of taxpayers file 2008 federal returns during two months of free tax assistance at area sites, resulting in refunds of more than twice the amount disbursed during the previous season. According to statistics provided by Phillip D. Landers, site administrator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and a professor of business administration/accounting at the college, students prepared 375 federal, 380 Pennsylvania and more than 350 local returns – for total refunds of $493,268. That amounts to more than double the $238,402 refunded in the 2007 tax season, and a sizeable increase over 2006’s $184,217 total.
Chelsey L. Wayman Named 'Student of the Month'

Chelsey L. Wayman, an accounting major from Rome, was chosen as April's Student of the Month by the Student Government Association at Penn College. “Chelsey has been indispensible to TRiO Student Support Services, where she is a peer tutor and coach,” her nominator wrote. “Chelsey covers a vast array of subjects … and delivers her services in a cheerful, capable manner, regularly going above and beyond to help her students.”
Accounting Alumnus Honored by Chamber of Commerce

A 1973 graduate of Penn College's immediate predecessor institution was honored by the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce at its eighth annual Education Celebration on Thursday. Thomas P. O'Connor Jr., who earned an associate degree in business and accounting from Williamsport Area Community College, was one of two recipients of the chamber's Alumni of the Year Award.
Penn College, Salvation Army Again Allies in Tax-Help Program

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Penn College students and community volunteers from The Salvation Army annually help hundreds of low-income local residents prepare their returns, soon will resume for the 2008 tax season. The Internal Revenue Service’s free program will be offered in Room 102 of the college's Madigan Library from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday from Feb. 2 through April 9. Tax assistance also will be available at The Salvation Army’s 457 Market St. location in downtown Williamsport and at the Muncy Public Library, 108 S. Main St. "We are anticipating a busy tax season as we work together with Penn College to provide low-income taxpayers with this free service so that they may receive all the tax credits and their full refund!” said Major Marie Harris, who, along with Pam Hicks, oversees The Salvation Army’s role in the partnership. “This year, we have expanded our sites to reach out even further in our county."
Students to Provide Taxpayer Assistance at North Campus

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Penn College students prepare income-tax returns at no cost, will offer three Fridays of by-appointment-only help to Northern Tier residents this season. The program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20, March 20 and April 3 at the college's North Campus, along Route 6 between Wellsboro and Mansfield.
Management Professor Leads Workshop at Conference in Spain

A professor of business administration/management and head of the business administration department at Penn College recently attended the 2008 Biannual International Conference of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education in Barcelona, Spain. At the Sept. 23-25 conference, Terry A. Girdon led a presentation/workshop for prospective international members on how to develop a self-study report and prepare for an accreditation visit.
Hundreds of Filers Benefit From Students’ Free Tax Assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Penn College students and the Salvation Army partnered to aid hundreds of lower-income individuals and families in preparing their returns, helped local residents receive nearly $240,000 in total refunds during the just-concluded 2007 tax year.
