John Manz
Director, National Sustainable Structures Center

John Manz

John Manz is responsible for the overall management and vision for NSSC’s infrastructure, training programs, and technical assistance services. John provides leadership at the EEB Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on the Task 7 Team on Education and Workforce initiatives, which has a concentrated focus on Building Operator training. He is also a key technical advisor for PA's Weatherization Assistance Program and assisted the U.S. Department of Energy’s efforts to draft the National Residential Energy Upgrade Guidelines. John has a diverse background in teaching vocational and HVAC technology, weatherization, and building science principles as well as owning several highly successful HVAC companies.

Alison Dillon
Assistant Director, National Sustainable Structures Center

Alison Dillon

Alison Dillon assists NSSC's director in managing the daily administration of the center's training programs, including proposal and grant management, budget support, and coordinating the implementation of NSSC's many training and certification programs. She also serves as the team's instructional designer in developing and improving NSSC's curricula. Alison is a BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist, LEED Green Associate, a Level 1 Thermographer, and provides training and certification guidance to PA's Weatherization Assistance Program.

Gerald Welshans
Instructional Specialist, National Sustainable Structures Center

Gerald Welshans

Gerald "Jerry" Welshans is a Pennsylvania-certified weatherization instructor and a subject matter expert in building maintenance technology and building science instruction. Jerry is a Level 1 Thermographer, a BPI “Super Proctor”, and holds BPI certifications for Building Analyst, Envelope Specialist, Heating Specialist, and Multifamily. He also serves as an instructor for NSSC's Building Operator training programs. Prior to working at Penn College, Jerry was a general science and vocational teacher as well as a building maintenance staff member responsible for air distribution and heating systems in commercial buildings. In addition, Jerry is a fourth-generation retired farmer, a second-generation butcher, and a retired Rescue Officer, all of which have given him specialized emergency medical experience that proves invaluable in teaching crew safety topics.

Brian Wilson
Instructional Specialist, National Sustainable Structures Center

Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson is a Pennsylvania-certified weatherization instructor and a BPI proctor for Building Analyst Professional and Envelope Specialist certifications. Brian serves as a key instructor for the center's PA Weatherization, NREL/BPI Home Energy Professional, and BPI training and certification programs. He is a Level 1 Thermographer and is certified to teach OSHA 10 and 30 Construction Industry and EPA Certified Lead Renovator. Brian's background is in carpentry and has earned degrees in Residential Construction Technology and Management as well as Architectural Drafting and Design.

John Wilson

John (Jack) Wilson is a Pennsylvania-certified weatherization instructor, a proctor for multiple BPI certifications, and a subject matter expert in combustion safety and ventilation. His background is in HVAC, electrical and plumbing trades in residential and light commercial new construction. As part of Penn College's role at the EEB Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Jack is responsible for managing NSSC's programs focused on Building Operator training.

Deb Lengel
Program Support Specialist, National Sustainable Structures Center

Deb Lengel photo

Deb Lengel provides general program support to NSSC's staff and is responsible for coordinating the details of on-site and in-field training and testing for all of NSSC's training and certification programs. Deb is the first point of contact at NSSC for incoming training requests, student questions, course registrations, and transcript requests. Among other administrative duties, she handles instructor scheduling, course and student record-keeping, invoicing and accounting, as well as website development.
