Guest Wine Maker
Walter Schug
Schug Carneros Estate Winery
Sonoma County, CA
Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and lifelong dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's winemaking style and reputation blossomed during his tenure as winemaker and vice president for Josephy Phelps Vineyards in the 1970's where he rapidly achieved the status of an industry leader.
Family owned and operated, Schug Carneros Estate is a reflection of many decades of Schug family involvement in the production of fine wines in both Germany and California. Both Walter and his wife, Gertrud, come from distinguished winemaking families of Germany, and have been deeply involved in the Califronia wine industry for over 30 years.
Schug Carneros Estate combines old world understanding and tradition with the most advanced winemaking technology available today. By using only the finest grapes available in California, and maintaining traditional European winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics.
The 1994 harvest marked the 40th vintage for winemaker Schug, a native of Germany's Rhein River. He marked this anniversary year with the release of his 1992 Carneros Pinot Noir --named California State Wine Champion and sweepstakes winner at the International Eastern Wine competition, selected as best red wine of 1,489 wines entered.
