How To Plan Your Visit on Career Day

Note to Chaperones:

Chaperones facilitate their students' successful experience on the Pennsylvania College of Technology campus. In order to do this, you must stay with your students at all times! This might sound tough, but we have found over the years that when chaperones "know the ropes," so to speak, and follow these guidelines, their students have a great experience. Wear comfortable shoes, because you will be walking-a lot! Dress for the weather-Career Day will take place rain or shine.

It's All About Careers:

Career Day is all about assisting your students in exploring careers. If you feel comfortable, talk to your students about your own career path. Students like to hear about a real-life career story. At Penn College, you will hear a lot about many exciting technical careers. Students most often like to know about salaries and job availability. How much will I make? How likely am I to get into a career? If you are in the classroom with students, prepare your students by leading them in the Career Scavenger Hunt activity before Career Day, where they can explore careers on the Internet. This will get your students thinking about careers.

Plan Your Itinerary:

So, you have to stick together and try to navigate around campus-how will you see everything you want to see? You need to plan your itinerary. Orient yourself to the campus by looking at the campus map. Then, carefully read through the detailed list of Career Day activities. We have organized the schedule by what BUILDING the activities are in, so that you can see all the sessions that are near to each other as you are walking around campus. We have also designed our schedule so that most activities begin on the hour or half-hour, or last either 20 minutes or 45 minutes to give you enough time to get to the next session.

Visit the helpful itinerary planner that will allow you to write down the sessions that your students want to see. Talk to your students and prioritize the sessions they want to see by listing them on the blank Itinerary grid. Be sure to write some backup sessions on the Itinerary in case the preferred session is full. If your students really want to see a session, you might want to get there early to be first in line. On some of the most "popular" sessions, there may be a wait.

Remember to Schedule Time for Lunch:

All this walking will make you hungry! Remember that if you and your students are brown bagging it, there are tables set up inside the Field House.

Back on the Bus:

Make sure everyone in your group knows when to meet back at the bus. Have a safe trip home!
