Student Help Desk Frequently Asked Quastions (FAQ)

Q: What should I bring to the Student Help Desk to get my computer fixed?

A: Bring your Penn College student ID card. If you have a desktop unit, bring only the computer; disconnect your monitor, keyboard, mouse and cables. If you have a laptop, bring its power supply. In case reinstallation is necessary, bring all CDs (i.e., operating system, applications such as Microsoft Office, and printer/hardware drivers) that came with the computer. List any files you would like to have backed-up in case we suggest reformatting your computer.

Q: What does it mean if my computer needs to be "reformatted"?

A: Spyware and virus infection can become so invasive that the best solution is to reformat the hard drive, which means removing all data and software from your computer. All documents, music files, video files, programs, pictures, etc. will be removed. The Student Help Desk will backup the files you requested before reformatting, with the exception of music and video files. (We will not reformat your computer without your permission.) After the hard drive is reformatted, we will re-install the operating system and restore the backed-up files. Please keep in mind that Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint are part of the Microsoft Office Suite and don’t come with Microsoft Windows operating systems. You must bring us your Microsoft Office disks if you would like them reinstalled.
