Internet Security: Best Practices and Protection
Spyware
Spyware is typically installed on your computer without your knowledge and runs without revealing itself. By the time you know spyware is on your computer (sluggish or unresponsive programs, uncontrollable browser behavior, and Internet connection problems), the damage may be done.
Some anti-virus and personal firewall programs have begun to offer spyware protection. If yours does not, there are several free anti-spyware programs available (see links at right). Warning: Installing anti-spyware software is not enough. To be truly protected, you must visit the Web site of your spyware program regularly and check for updates.
Viruses
As with human viruses, the best approach to dealing with computer viruses is to defend yourself from being infected in the first place. To protect your computer and your files, you must take proactive measures. Follow these guidelines to safeguard your computer and files:
- Backup your data files to external storage regularly. If your computer becomes infected with a virus that cannot be removed, the only solution is to reformat (completely erase) your hard drive. In this case, you will have to revert to your last file backup.
- Do not download or open any files that have not been checked by an anti-virus program, especially "freeware" and file-sharing programs.
- Update your operating system, Web browser, and e-mail software often to protect your computer from security breaches identified by the vendors. (Check vendor Web sites).
- Install anti-virus software on your home computer. More than 500 new viruses are discovered each month. Therefore, to be truly protected, you must also update your virus signature files often, at least weekly.
Free software that detects and removes spyware from your computer. An enhanced version can be purchased that stops spyware from installing itself on your system in the first place.
Free program that works with Windows Explorer 7 to guard against pop-ups and other security threats.
Freeware that will not remove existing spyware from your computer, but will prevent it from being installed.
