Bryon is one of the lucky few who knew exactly what he wanted to do before he went to college. Since he was a young boy, Bryon loved music and the radio. For fun, he would pretend he was a deejay by spinning records for his family. When it came time to go to college, he chose to major in Mass Communications. He felt this would help him gain a career in the world of radio.
His degree and deejay practicing paid off; he received his first position in broadcasting in 1991 at an oldies station in Williamsport. He took any position offered and worked his way up from a part-time board operator to full-time air staff in charge of public service announcements and promoting station events.
After taking a break from the radio and working as a front desk clerk at an area hotel, Bryon soon realized that he belonged back in the broadcasting field. He landed a position with WILQ, one of the most prominent stations in Williamsport, where he worked for three years.
In 1997, Bryon accepted a position with AccuWeather, which broadcasts nationally and in Canada. He started by taking the most unpopular shift, which began at 4 a.m. With time, he received better shifts and a larger listening market.
In 2001, he received a promotion to radio services coordinator. In this position, Bryon works with various radio station clients, addresses a variety of workplace problems, schedules broadcasts, serves as an advocate for both employees and clients, and continues to broadcast. He also serves as the assistant manager of the Radio Broadcast Department, dealing with a variety of managerial tasks, such as scheduling, handling problems and conflicts, and hiring staff members.
Bryon handles these many responsibilities well. In recognition of his accomplishments, he has received seven awards from AccuWeather, including Client and Company Service and Outstanding Performance. Another “award” he has received is having people tell him they have heard him on the radio.
Bryon also offers his broadcasting services to the local AIDS Project. He promotes the cause and various fundraising events on the radio and serves on a variety of committees related to the project. This past year he served as the Promotions Committee co-chair for their Casino Night, which raised over $10,000.
Bryon hopes to continue his career in broadcasting and to continue his education.
For those thinking about a career in broadcasting, Bryon offers some advice. In any field, the biggest advantage is getting in the door. In order to break into a field, many times one must take a less glamorous position or the unpopular shift and then work their way up. Bryon says there are a lot of opportunities in broadcasting if one can sell themselves and is willing to be flexible with duties and schedules. He also advises people in the field to keep up with technology. Now the majority of broadcasting is done through MP3s and the Internet.
