Although Andrew is quite new to the workforce, he has learned a lot in his short time working for Dan Ryan Builders. Andrew was fortunate to intern with the company while he was pursuing his degree. Afterwards, they offered him a full-time position as an assistant estimator.
Day-to-day Duties
Being an assistant estimator allows Andrew to learn a variety of functions in the field of residential construction. He spends a large portion of his day making sure the bills and invoices are accurate. This attention to detail ensures that the contractors, subcontractors, sales team, buyers, and prospective buyers are getting the appropriate product for the right price.
When prospective buyers turn into buyers, Andrew helps to develop a budget that will make the home-building process run more smoothly. Dan Ryan Builders can build a single family home in 90-120 days; therefore, keeping an accurate budget is essential. Also, if a product is offered and is not in the sales contract, Dan Ryan Builders’ policy is to give the product for free. This makes Andrew’s responsibility of verifying facts and figures vital to the company’s bottom line.
Although Andrew is not involved in a home’s construction, he does spend a portion of his time at the field location to check on the progress. This gives him more contact with the subcontractors and gives him a better understanding of the whole process.
Long-term Goals
Andrew’s long-term goal is to advance within the company. He would like to become a purchasing manager and eventually a division president. This will allow him to be in charge of an entire division of the company. Dan Ryan Builders is a growing company with a variety of divisions in the eastern part of the United States, which makes Andrew’s goals realistic and achievable.
Advice for Students
Andrew offers some advice for prospective and current students. First, one must give 100 percent in order to get 100 percent. Being dedicated both in school and on the job can help a person achieve great success. Secondly, in the construction industry, the ability to speak another language, especially Spanish can be exceptionally helpful.
