Casey’s Background
Casey Kurtz lives for the outdoors. When it came time to select a major, landscaping was a natural fit. After visiting colleges, Casey says Penn College was the most impressive on his list. He remembers seeing a bulletin board at the Earth Science Center posted full of job opportunities to match his interests. That was enough to convince Casey that Penn College was the place he needed to be. In 2002, he graduated with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Landscape/Nursery Technology.
The Brickman Group, Ltd.
Casey is a senior superintendent at the Brickman Group, a leader in the commercial landscape industry with over 160 branches serving 29 states. Casey is responsible for approximately 50 clients in northeastern Pennsylvania. Whether Casey is managing the installation of a newly designed entrance-way or ensuring the snow is properly cleared before his clients must travel to work, the technical knowledge obtained at Penn College is put into practice daily. Because the majority of Brickman’s business is created through referrals from current clients, Casey focuses on providing excellent customer service. He uses his knowledge and experience to gain trust and establish relationships, the key to future growth and sustainability in the landscape business.
Advice
According to Casey, Penn College is well respected in the landscape industry. Many professionals are familiar with the quality of a Penn College education. He advises all students to learn as much as possible while studying this industry. Refine your technical knowledge and learn how to effectively communicate with your peers. From Brickman colleagues to sub-contractors and clients, Casey is presented with many challenges and troubleshooting is a daily occurrence. A clear line of communication is needed to satisfy all parties involved. Casey also encourages students to attend career fairs to learn more about the companies represented in his industry. His relationship with Brickman started at the career fair hosted by the Earth Science Center.
Future
Casey loves his work in the landscape industry. The outdoor atmosphere, varied challenges, and daily responsibilities keep his career interesting. He welcomes the diversity of each project and the personalities of each client. He is grateful to the opportunities provided by the Brickman Group but, someday, would like to start his own landscaping business with a commercial or industrial focus. There is no doubt continued success is in Casey’s future.
