Richard Boyer

Rick’s Background

Rick Boyer knew from a young age that he wanted to be an artist. It all started in Kindergarten when his teacher asked the famous question: What do you what to be when you grown up? Throughout these early years, Rick’s interest in the arts continued to grow. It was in high school during a weeklong art seminar that his art interest focused on the field of graphic design. He knew a technical college would provide him with the skills needed to succeed in this industry. Penn College was the right fit.

Merion Publications, Inc.

Rick graduated from Penn College in 2003, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design. He is an ad designer for Merion Publications, Inc., publisher of ADVANCE newsmagazines, which serves a variety of specific healthcare disciplines with news, career guidance, product information, continuing education opportunities, and job listings. Rick welcomes the flexibility and freedom involved in his position. He is able to successfully manage a variety of assignments and daily tasks. (He suggested that as an art student he was not always successful in managing projects well, but his professors were always there to offer advice and steer him in the right direction.) Rick credits his time management skills to the leadership of his college professors. Without the ability to manage his time, Rick could not effectively or efficiently complete his job responsibilities.

Advice

Rick offers some advice for students interested in the world of graphic design. Explore and research all aspects of this industry. The more you learn about your interest, the better prepared you are to make the final decision regarding your career path. Whether you learn about the field by exploring information online, visiting colleges, speaking with current students, or speaking with industry representatives, you are setting yourself up for a positive outcome. Also, listen to the advice offered by peers and professors. Students must be open to constructive criticism and use the experience of others to better their work style and skills.

Future

Rick’s passion for the field of art is unmistakable. While he continues to improve his design skills and experience with Merion, his new found interest is in photography. Rick has explored the commercial side of photography, but is more interested in fine art photography. In his spare time, he’s experimenting with a current trend that tests his artistic abilities. He creates unusual photographs using the camera’s manual shutter controls and exposure settings. Rick plans to build his name recognition by displaying this work at exhibits in the Philadelphia area.
