Why Penn College? Please explain how you decided to major in Computer Aided Product Design.
I was graduating from a two-year CAD program at SUNY Delhi College of Technology in Delhi, New York. I wanted
to transfer into a four-year design / engineering program that would take my career in the right direction. Two former professors recommended Penn College. Once I saw the campus life, faculty, location and curriculum, there was no turning back.
Please explain your responsibilities with Protex International Corporation.
On any given day, I work on developing new products for the company, perform engineering changes, test plastic and metal parts, record logs, and maintain documentation. I collaborate with other company departments such as purchasing, quality, production, and customer service. I am also active with the Long Island Inventor User Group, the
local Autodesk User Group Inc.
Do you see your field changing in the next three to five years?
Yes. New software updates and the evolution of rapid prototyping. Staying up-to-date with current software is key for design and engineering.
What is the most significant thing you learned during your first year of work?
When you are searching for a job, make sure you are comfortable at the job. Don’t be afraid to ask the employer any question you have on your mind when you go for an interview. Be honest with employers because you’re going to work there for years if not decades with some companies. With that being said, you might as well enjoy it. If not, then the career in design and engineering is not for you.
What should students do to prepare themselves for you industry?
Learn as much math, science, and CAD software as you can. Don't take constructive criticism personally, take it as a learning experience. Challenge yourself everyday in the classroom and learn different aspects of design. It will be very beneficial when you start your career as a designer.
Do you participate in any extra-curricular activities?
I enjoy exercising and playing sports. I also try to keep up with the latest technology and monitor the money market.
