Academic Program
Honors students in various majors work together.
The Honors program comprises a series of activities that combine to form an integrated experience that challenges the student beyond their normal curriculum. The academic program consists of colloquia, service work, travel, an honors project with symposium presentation, and conference attendance. A theme for each entering class will be developed by the Honors Program Committee. This theme will provide a focus for the academic program and will be introduced in the colloquia.
The academic program will last one and one half consecutive years and is organized as follows:
- Semester I (Spring): Colloquia (1 credit)
- The Colloquia Coordinator will develop a colloquia series that includes a variety of presenters to allow a broad exploration of the program theme.
- Semester II (Summer): Service Project
- Students will contribute twelve hours of volunteer service to an organization of their choice. If possible, the activity should relate to the Honors theme. The student must maintain a log of service activities and complete twelve hours of service by the end of Semester 3.
- Semester III (Fall): Honors Course
- Students will contract to complete a project in a course of their choosing. The project will be in addition to the regular requirements for the course and should relate to the Honors Program theme.
- The student will identify a professor willing to mentor him or her through the project.
- Semester IV (Spring): Symposium and Study Abroad (3 credits)
- Students will enroll in a non-credit seminar on symposia organizing and presentation skills. The students will organize a symposium at which they will present the research or projects developed in their Honors Course.
- Students will participate in a study abroad program associated with the Honors theme. Students can earn 3 credits by completing the study abroad academic requirements developed by the Colloquia Coordinator. The College will cover travel expenses and lodging.
- 3rd and 4th Year
- Baccalaureate students will serve on the Student Advisory Committee.
- Students may attend a professional conference in their subject area with travel expenses, lodging, and conference fees paid by the College.
- A limited number of students may travel to conferences with preference given to fourth-year students and those with accepted presentation proposals.
