Q: How many exhibitions does the gallery have?
A: The Gallery at Penn College is host to numerous exhibitions throughout the year, including:
Current View Artist Series highlights contemporary artists and aims to broaden and enrich the educational experience at Penn College. Artists working in a variety of media are juried and selected by a committee of art faculty.
Penn College Proud Showcase features the artwork or personal collections of members of the Penn College, Williamsport Area Community College, and Williamsport Technical Institute family, including alumni, faculty and staff, and retirees.
The Gallery is also the venue for special exhibits and events highlighting works that range from local collections to international traveling exhibitions.
The Gallery schedules exhibits for other display areas across campus, including both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Artists interested in applying for any of the above must complete the entry form and include all of the requested materials; see Entry/Eligibility requirements, below.
Q: How much space is available in the gallery?
A: The Gallery at Penn College is approximately 3,000 square feet. [Gallery Layout PDF] It consists of 160 feet of linear wall space at a height of 11' 4"; 82 feet of the walls are 3/4" plywood, covered with 1/2" drywall. Up to 200 feet of additional linear wall space is available through the use of modular wall units measuring 4' wide by 8' high [Gallery with portable walls installed].
The sizes of the other exhibition spaces across campus vary, but are suitable for installations and large sculpture.
Q: What are the entry/eligibility requirements?
A: Entries are reviewed on a rolling basis.
Artists working in any medium are invited to submit 12-20 slides of current, original work for review. Though slides are preferred, images on CD are accepted. Recommended resolution for 4"x6" images is 600 dpi in JPEG file format only. CD's should contain only the image files; all other supporting information, such as a resume, must be mailed with the entry form. Applicants are encouraged to include a contact sheet of the JPEG images.
Artists must be 18 years or older. To be considered, entries must include:
- 12-20 slides* of current work for review
- Completed entry form (PDF)
- Resume or biography with artist's statement
- Optional: Synopsis of a proposed lecture, demonstration and/or workshop (with estimated running time), if applying for an honorarium. Exhibits may be scheduled without a visiting artist. (See Honorarium, below.)
*All slides must be clearly labeled with the artist's name, title of work, size and medium of work, AND must be numbered to match the entry form.
Honorarium — An honorarium may be offered if an artist selected for exhibition also is willing to present gallery lectures, demonstrations and/or workshops. Artists must submit synopsis of lecture (minimum) with entry form to be considered for an honorarium.
Expenses — Limited travel expenses may be provided. Overnight lodging may be provided for artists who are selected to present lectures, demonstrations or workshops.
Q: Will the College allow me to sell artwork while in the gallery?
A: Potential buyers will be referred directly to the artist. No commission will be charged on works sold. Work must remain in the gallery until the end of the exhibition.
Q: What are the exhibition policies/reproduction rights?
A: Reproduction Rights: Penn College reserves the right to reproduce any work accepted for exhibition. The Gallery assumes the right to photograph works for publicity or catalogue purposes.
The Gallery reserves the right to reject works that have been inaccurately represented by the slide. Works must be received ready for installation: work must be framed, matted wired, etc. The Gallery reserves the right to reject works for exhibition that are not original, are deemed extraordinarily fragile or unstable, or are not installation ready.
The artist is responsible for costs to deliver and/or ship artwork, and for insurance during shipment. All works will be insured against theft and damage while on exhibit in our Gallery; the artist is responsible for notifying The Gallery of the works' values prior to shipping.
