Energy Star
The EPA sets federal standards for homes that earn the ENERGY STAR certification through energy efficiency. Quickly becoming one of the most recognizable energy programs in the US, ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC) and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20 to 30% more efficient than standard homes.
ENERGY STAR qualified homes usually include energy-efficient features such as properly installed and effective insulation, high performance windows, tight building envelope construction and HVAC ducts, hi-efficiency HVAC systems, and ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and appliances.
Through ENERGY STAR, builders and other home industry professionals can differentiate themselves in the market. New homes that qualify as ENERGY STAR provide greater comfort and durability for home buyers. In addition, ENERGY STAR qualified homes help protect the environment by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with global warming.
The factory built housing industry has specific challenges related to full implementation of ENERGY STAR certification due to the nature of building part of the structure in a plant environment and then completing the project at a separate location. The FBHC is currently exploring opportunities for ENERGY STAR applications with the factory built housing industry and is working on establishing a certification protocol specific to modular construction utilizing the EPA’s guidelines.
Training and educational events addressing ENERGY STAR are proposed for spring 2008. Check back to the FBHC Web site for future events and information.
