Smart Energy Exit Signs
Lights are a primary source of energy consumption on campus. The Classroom Lighting tip page gives you a way to help conserve energy, but what about those lights that must remain on continuously, such as the illuminated exit signs?
Did you know?
Many exit signs are lit by two incandescent bulbs totaling 30 watts. That doesn't sound like a lot until you realize that these signs must be lit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What Penn College is Doing
Exit signs are being retrofitted with LED lights. The new LED lights use only 3 watts. The BTC/LEC building has more than 50 lit exit signs - most retrofitted with the new LED lights.
Savings
Just in the BTC/LEC building alone the College will save more than $1,000 a year in energy costs. Also, there will be less maintenance required for these long-lasting lights.
