Note-taker Assistance
Note-taker accommodations are available to students with documented disabilities; however, there has to be a direct relationship between the disability and the need for note-taking assistance. You will need to meet with Disability Services to discuss this accommodation.
Procedure for requesting a note-taker
It is the students’ responsibility to:
- Contact Disability Services at the beginning of each semester to request note-taker accommodations. Disability Services will fill out an Accommodations Request form notifying your instructor that you are eligible for the note-taker accommodation.
- Hand-deliver the Accommodations Request form to the instructor of the course for which the note-taker is needed.
- Make the initial attempt to find a note-taker.
- You may approach the instructor to ask for help or ask someone in the class to be a note-taker.
- Note-takers can be compensated through the award of a stipend.
- Request NCR paper (2-page, carbonless paper) for note-takers.
- You may pick up a supply of paper in the Disability Services Office.
- If note-taker prefers to use his or her own paper to take notes, copies of the notes may be made free-of-charge through Disability Services.
- Exchange phone numbers with the note-taker as a backup, in the event that the note-taker or you miss class.
- Having use of a note-taker is no excuse for missing classes. If you are absent from class three times, the note-taker is not responsible for taking further class notes until notified by Disability Services.
- If the note-taker is not showing for class, alert the instructor and contact Disability Services. At this point, the accommodation is not being given and intervention on the part of Disability Services may be appropriate.
- Contact Disability Services if, at any time, you decide to discontinue use of the note-taker accommodation or are dissatisfied with the note-taker accommodation. If Disability Services does not hear from you, we assume that you are being accommodated.
If note-takers have questions about this process, please have them contact Disability Services.
