Sign Language Interpreters
Sign language interpreters will be made available to students whose documentation supports this service.
Procedures for requesting a sign language interpreter
It is the students' responsibility to:
- Contact Disability Services prior to the beginning of each semester to request a sign language interpreter for scheduled courses.
- Indicate your preferences for interpreting (ASL, English, oral, etc.). Disability Services will make every effort to honor your preference.
- You may request a non-certified interpreter. In the event that a non-certified interpreter provides services, the interpreter will request that you sign a Request for Use of Non-Registered Interpreter/Transliterator waiver form.
- Notify the Disability Services Specialist and the interpreter if there are any changes to a class – the date and time, or if the instructor changes the room.
- Arrive to class promptly. It is discourteous to the professor, the interpreter, and the rest of the class to arrive late and important information may be missed.
- To request an interpreter for any outside class meetings or College sponsored activity, contact Disability Services at least three days in advance. Disability Services will contact an interpreter and make arrangements for coverage.
This includes meetings with professors, advisers, and group project meetings. In some situations, students may not have three days advance notice; these requests will be reviewed by Disability Services.
- Notify Disability Services at least 48 hours prior to any planned absences, so that the interpreter can be notified.
- Notify Disability Services if you have an emergency absence so that the interpreter can be notified. Exchange phone numbers and/or e-mail addresses with the interpreter in the event that either the interpreter or you has an emergency and will miss class.
- In the unlikely event that an interpreter is unable to attend a class, Disability Services will attempt to find a substitute interpreter. If a substitute cannot be secured, Disability Services will provide you with a tape recorder. You should tape record the lecture and provide Disability Services with the tape as soon as possible. Disability Services will have the tape transcribed in a reasonable amount of time.
NOTE: Disability Services may not be aware the interpreter is absent, especially in unpredictable events, such as car problems, traffic, weather conditions, etc. - Notify the Disability Services Specialist if an interpreter is absent from class or late to class.
- Interpreters must be requested for any exam taken in the Disability Services Office. You must schedule the exam following the test accommodation procedure. If you request an interpreter for final exams, you will need to contact the Disability Services Specialist a minimum of two weeks in advance.
- Failure to provide advanced notice of absences (planned or emergency) will result in a need to meet with the Disability Services Specialist to discuss receiving continued services.
