Class Scheduling

Please Note: The points presented below should be considered only in relationship to your unique learning needs. In some cases, school and curriculum restrictions may prevent schedule changes. There also may be financial aid and/or Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) sponsorship implications if you choose to decrease the number of credits per semester and extend your program to additional semesters.

Back-to-back Classes

For students with physical and/or processing disabilities, schedule breaks between classes when possible so that you get to all of your classes on time and/or have time to process the information from the previous class.

Number of Credits per Semester

Twelve or 15 credits a semester may be enough for you to handle. If you decrease the credits per semester below what is stated in the Penn College catalog for your major, you may need to make up the credits during summer sessions (if available) or extend your program to extra semesters. Either of these choices can have an impact on financial aid and/or OVR sponsorship. Disability Services recommends that you contact these sources before decreasing your credit load.

Balance of Courses

If your reading and/or writing skills are not very strong, you might want to adjust your schedule to reduce the number of courses that relate to your learning weaknesses and add courses that tap into your strengths. Success, not frustration, is your goal!

Program Advisers

You will be assigned a faculty adviser from your program major. If you choose to self-disclose your disability to your adviser, then he or she may be more effective in helping you schedule classes for the following semester. However, while the faculty adviser may not necessarily have an understanding of the disability, he or she may better understand your request for a reduced credit load per semester or the need to attend an extra semester.
