Textbook Scanning/Recording
Disability Services will scan and record required course materials for students with disabilities whose documentation supports the use of books in alternate format. This process will be performed using Kurzweil 3000 text-to-speech software. You will need to meet with Disability Services to determine if you qualify to use this service.
Procedure for requesting scanning/recording
It is the student’s responsibility to:
- Contact Disability Services at the beginning of each semester to determine if documentation supports the use of the scanning/recording service.
- Contact the Disability Services Program Assistant to request scanning. Requests must be made and scheduled a minimum of two working days before the date that the recorded material is needed.
- Qualified materials include required course reading, including textbook chapters and handouts.
- There is a limit of three chapters per request.
- Submit to Disability Services a copy of your schedule of courses for the semester, as well as a copy of the course syllabus for which the scanning/recording service is being requested.
- Provide Disability Services with blank CD-RW(s), as needed.
- Pick up CD(s) and your course materials (textbook, handout, etc.) as soon as possible after the Disability Services Program Assistant notifies you that your materials are ready.
NOTE: Disability Services holds the right to suspend scanning/recording services if the above procedure is abused.
Tips for listening to scanned/recorded material
- Find a quiet, distraction-free environment.
- Take notes while listening. Highlight the text and pause the reader when necessary.
- Listen for short periods of time. Stop periodically to review and summarize what was read.
- Allow enough time to listen and listen again to the text. Listening to audio books takes time.
